antiquated right--D?
P for the first and Prey as the answer?
Is this the Leigh in question?
Grrr...
Both wrong.
Hint on Clue #1--it is NOT an abbreviation for ANYTHING. It is quite literally an "antiquated" "right."
And no, that is not the Leigh in question. But I have hope yet that you can crack the code....
This one has been KILLING me since you've posted it, J&Y....I check it like 5-6 times a day to see the progress on it.
I'll throw out a couple of ideas to see if anything will snowball for me...is the first clue two separate synonyms? Like, "Old""Turn"? I only ask because both words were in separate quotations, instead of just one. Also, the only four-letter words I could think of ending in -rey were "grey", and "trey"...but I can't find a way to fit either "G" or "T" into the first clue...
Elodin: "Tombs is for feckless twits who can't chew their own food. My boy's a Re'lar! He has the feck of twenty men!"
Kvothe: “Books are a poor substitute for female companionship, but they are easier to find.”
Simmon: ”It’s just ointment in case you get burned...but if you mix it with piss, it turns into candy.” Sim’s expression was deadpan. “Delicious candy.”
"old right" = Paleoconservative ??
All that's left of what we were is what we have become.
The first clue is only ONE thing. I put those in quotation marks to emphasize that they and they alone were the clues to the answer.
HOWEVER....
...you are DEFINITELY on the right track with your guessing! If the correct answer were a vampire, your neck would be sporting two red marks now.... Not going to give it away at this point, because I want you to know the reason WHY a particular answer is the correct one, but I think the Thanksgiving turkey will be yours yet!
(@Jon: Nope. "Right" is the direction, not like "right wing.")
Rectory?
recht are e y?
Grrr...
Is the Leigh in question Richard Leigh? I wouldn't have noticed the "code" jibe if you wouldn't have put it in bold.
If it is, I still can't come up with an answer to the first clue...the only four letter word ending in -rey I can think of involving Richard Leigh is "grey", and that's only because his last book was "Grey Magic." But that wouldn't make sense, because that's the first half of the novel's title...I've even looked up older definitions of "right," but all I've found that is close to the directional term is "dexter"...which, at the moment, I can't fit anywhere.I pondered these four clues and thought
of something Leigh enjoys. I ought
to've seen it sooner--how I laugh,
for it's only the second half!

Simmon: ”It’s just ointment in case you get burned...but if you mix it with piss, it turns into candy.” Sim’s expression was deadpan. “Delicious candy.”
Unless Leigh refers to Leigh Teabing, a character FROM Da Vinci code, who was a Historian and puzzle-master.
As I was riding to the grocery store with my girlfriend, I gave her the clues to date and she immediately said "Year."
Not sure if that is it but I thought it was a good guess.
Grrr...
Another hint, but please don't click this one until you've done what I've suggested in my above post
Earl Grey?
Grrr...
Grey, because it's the second half of "Earl Grey"?
I think you may need to split that lovely bird up into sections, J&Y.

Excellent riddle, John_and_Yoko! A real challenge! Congratulations to SigTauGimp and Maturins_Daughter, as well. A great team effort.
Grrr...
You used to say "gee" to a horse to get it to turn right.... right?
