:-: Didn't write it, just rhymed it....

A friend gave me this one, but I've embellished it.

As I was walking late one night
I saw an antiquated right. [gee (guessed by Maturins_Daughter)]
It was to my far left, say true,
and then I (with respect to you)
did see a state of being pass [are (guessed by Maturins_Daughter)]
on my near left, and then just as
important as the number pi, [e (guessed by Gaberax)]
    my third companion, walking nigh
to my close right. And thence did come,
on my far right--it struck me dumb--
the question which, if asked aloud, [why (guessed by Gaberax)]
would end all questions. Hand to shroud,
I pondered these four clues and thought
of something Leigh enjoys. I ought
    to've seen it sooner--how I laugh,
for it's only the second half!
Before me now the answer was,
and if you tell, 'twill give me pause.

Answer: GREY (guessed by Gaberax and SigTauGimp)

Not sure if this is a clue by clue thing or a all clues point to one thing...which makes it that much more fun...but I will give you my first impressions...

Antiquated right...could be a right as "a right to know" or it could be something to do with angles....Hmmmm

    State of being...."am", "are", "is"?

    Important as Pi? "e"

Question that would end all questions? "Why?" or "Y"

    KNOW-IS-E-Y

    Noisy?

    ***Anticipates the "NO!"***

Not "noisy," but you are on the right track, my friend, my friend.

    Important as Pi IS e.

Question to end all questions IS "Why?"

The other answers you gave are not quite correct, although the one you gave for the second clue is DEFINITELY on the right track....

And for the first one, you're clever to be thinking of different definitions of the word "right"--mayhap you should stick with that strategy....

As I was walking late one night
    I saw an antiquated right.
    Right to bear arms?
    Right of seizure?
    Right of way?
    Rite of spring?
    Rite of passage?

It was to my far left, say true,
and then I (with respect to you)
Are I and U or U and I part of the answer?

did see a state of being pass
    were, was, be, being, been?

on my near left, and then just as
important as the number pi, E
    my third companion, walking nigh
to my close right. And thence did come,
on my far right--it struck me dumb--
the question which, if asked aloud, Why or Y?
would end all questions. Hand to shroud,
I pondered these four clues and thought
of something Leigh enjoys. I ought
    Vivan Leigh?

    to've seen it sooner--how I laugh,
for it's only the second half!
Before me now the answer was,
and if you tell, 'twill give me pause.

Just trying to sort it out. Maybe someone else will put it all together.
    Damned good (and frustrating) riddle!

None of those are correct. Try thinking of a different right....

It was to my far left, say true,
and then I (with respect to you)
Are I and U or U and I part of the answer?

    Neither is, no.

did see a state of being pass
    were, was, be, being, been?

    Nope--you were closer earlier....

on my near left, and then just as
important as the number pi, E
    my third companion, walking nigh
to my close right. And thence did come,
on my far right--it struck me dumb--

    Nope, wrong "Leigh."

    to've seen it sooner--how I laugh,
for it's only the second half!

You may not have got it yet, but at least you're thinking. I believe you'll get the right answer, it's just a matter of when....

    And thanks!

Elodin: "Tombs is for feckless twits who can't chew their own food. My boy's a Re'lar! He has the feck of twenty men!"

Kvothe: “Books are a poor substitute for female companionship, but they are easier to find.”

Simmon: ”It’s just ointment in case you get burned...but if you mix it with piss, it turns into candy.” Sim’s expression was deadpan. “Delicious candy.”

Tell you what--ignore the "I" before "(with respect to you)" because it's no different from any other "I" in the clue.

The second clue, in other words, is "a state of being with respect to you."

Correct so far--and you were REALLY closer to the second clue in your first post. You ALMOST had it, in fact....

As for antiquated right, keep guessing.... Remember it's antiquated RIGHT.... And remember, there are different definitions of the word "right"....

If you want a hint, here it is (since Clue #1 is DEFINITELY the hardest):

It is NOT that kind of right at all....

    Hint to Clue #1

    No, no, no....

It refers to "right" itself--an antiquated "right." (Not left)

What's an antiquated word for "right"?

HINT: Look at the two clues you've solved already.... Do they have anything in common?

Oh, I suck at the riddles. My mind generally doesn't work that way. I read them all though and that came to mind so I figured I'd throw it out there in case it could help anyone.

Try to focus on "right" itself, not the "not left." That was just a clue as to the definition of "right" that was intended.
