Different Seasons was the winner of the bracket, with a score of 4.475. The Gunslinger was the runner-up, with a score of 4.186440678. Both will advance to Round 2 of the competition.

right. but if gunslinger had this as votes
    59 votes - rated 5 with 28 votes
and different seasons had this as votes
    44 votes - rated 5 with 21 votes
then how is the gunslinger lower than different seasons? i'm not a math person (obviously) and the rest of the categories made sense to me but this one i'm just lost in. . . sorry.

Look at the Final average score (FAS).

I think its more of a reading comprehension thing.

It is based on the average score, with all of the other votes being taken into account. You also have to look at the fact that more people voted in The Gunslinger poll than in the Different Seasons poll.

    oooooh.

so basically, when you do the averaging the fact that more people voted in the gunslinger poll than in the other poll actually hurt.

    ::nods wisely::

thanks aaron, i appreciate the answer.

Also, the percentage is a good indication, too. In this case, Different Seasons beat out The Gunslinger for the top spot in the bracket by just 0.27%.

Actually, I don't think the number of votes matters that much. Again, it's more about what percentage of 5s, 4s, 3s, 2s and 1s there is altogether. Am I right, Aaron?

But of course I would urge everyone to vote on every book. As you can see voting has steadily dwindled down to a point where 30 people that voted for The Shining (our highest vote-getter so far with 69) did not for some reason vote for Christine (which got a measly 39 votes, the lowest thus far).

You're right, pablo, the number of votes doesnt really matter in most cases. It is all about the average score. A good way to look at it is that if The Gunslinger hadn't gotten more votes total than Different Seasons, the chances that it would have received less fives or the same amount of fives would be pretty high.

I can't say the winners and runners up surprise me very much. But I look forward to when these brackets finish and we go into the next rounds--who knows how it'll turn out then?

The moral is, the more people vote, the more accurate the results. I mean, if only three people vote for a book and all three give it a 5, it'll get rated 5 with 100% of the vote, for a FAS of 5. That's not very accurate, though, because most people did not vote. So, more votes equals better results.

I am surprised somewhat by The Long Walk advancing. I would've picked Cujo or even Firestarter over it. And yeah, Round 2 will be fun!

to be truthful i'd have preferred if there had only been only three votes for Gunslinger, all being fives.

Well, I'll grant you, I've only read The Stand out of that bracket....

But Frank Darabont's decision to film The Long Walk certainly makes me think it's a good one....

Well the next round should produce more objective results, as it will consist of grading the books in different areas. Since there will be a greater scale, there will be more varied results, directly reflecting the book's content.

And The Long Walk progressing doesn't surprise me at all. If anything, it shows me that this ranking system is working, because I know The Long Walk is a great book, but it is definitely not a widely-popular title. The fact that it triumphed over books that are more popular, though not as good by far (IMHO) reaffirms for me what we're doing here.
