Default How did they know where they would arrive..?

How did Balazar and the men who had hired him know where Roland and Eddie would arrive when Roland and Eddie didn't know it either...?
I know Mia helped them but the plan was that Jake and Callahan would go after Calvin. So why did all those people wait for the gunslingers at the gas station?

Or were they hired to kill anyone who would suddenly appear from nowhere?
How do you think it worked?

    Roland would have understood.

The same way the Manni knew that Callahan was going to be in the cave. Walter told them.

But how did he know that Roland wouldn't go after Susannah? In fact that what he wanted... but the door changed its mind.

    Roland would have understood.

Remember he's a demon wizard, so he ways of knowing how things happen. Or where things happen. Etc.

    Mmmmm.
I don't buy the Walter angle.
Damn good question Letti, but I'd have to re-read to comment - don't have a clear recollection of the details. WERE they lying in full ambush right there & then? - yes, I seem to recall they were - as soon as Roland & Eddie appeared they opened fire? How the hell could they have been that ready?

This may be a very good question!

I think they were hired by a Crimson King henchman to kill anyone that appeared from a special place. I don't think Walter played any part in all this.

*AHEM* Walter WAS one of the Crimson King's henchmen...his lieutenant actually.

That's true! Well, what I actually meant was that I think it must have been someone else because Walter was already letting go of the CK at that time in the story, wasn't he? Sorry for the silly mistake.

maybe they were actually there to kill Stephen King and decided that Roland and Eddie were a priority.

Human kind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one and only truth.

No, he hadn't at that point. Remember he had been most likely the one who left the audio tape recorder with the tape saying where Callahan would end up. Why doesn't it make sense that he would be the one to tell Il Roche's soldiers where to wait for Roland and Eddie or whomever was coming through that door?

I don't think so. Such a planned thing can't change from one day to the other. And somehow I feel if the CK could have decidd who to kill he would have killed Stephen King instead of Roland.

    Roland would have understood.

There's no reason for me to believe that it wasn't Walter so I can't give you any explanation. This is just that I felt it must have been someone else.

I believe the ambush was a combination of the various villains working in conjunction.

We know that the mobsters were putting pressure on Calvin Tower to sell the Lot. Due to Toren's carelessness, they were easily able to track Tower to the correct town, although they were unaware of the address. The spying Mia likely heard the plan concerning the ka-tet picking up Toren's forwarding address from the gas station and probably sent the information to Sayre, who in turn sent the mobsters to stake out the station. They probably didn't know that Roland and Eddie were the ones that were coming through, but they knew someone would and were gunning for whoever turned up. The gangsters weren't necessarily aware that the guys would turn up out of thin air, or that other worlds were involved at all, just that they had to wait at the gas station.

How they knew the date and time, I'm not sure. Likely Sayre would have had an idea of how much time passed in the keystone world in relation to End-world to make an estimate. Either that or Walter or the Red King 'precogged' the info.

Of course considering Mia and Sayre's plan to take Black 13 with them, the door back to the keystone world should have been permanently closed from Sayre's point of view (I'm sure he's the mastermind in this case although Walter might have taken a role too) but it makes sense that they'd take care of every eventuality. Especially as Sayre was probably unaware exactly when they would cross over from End-World. For all he knew they'd do it before Mia had escaped (remember they were planning on coming to the 70s before Mia altered their plans somewhat.)

This is some interesting ideas here, Sayre working in conjunction with information from Walter or even from Los' himself. Makes a lot of sense the more I think about it.

I wonder how much Donnie Russert's work on the subject came into play? You recall that Donnie, the history prof from Vandy, did a lot of work on walk-ins...but I don't imagine Balazar and the boys hung out at the library. Am I being unkind to Balazar? Perhaps like Eddie, I should reflect "on how much simpler life would be if people would stay in the pigeonholes where you originally put them."

Baffling question, though, as someone said in Chip McAvoy's store when the shooting started, "Just what in the blue hell is this?" Maybe the answer lies in who paid Balazar to do the job?

If they laid out cold hard cash to get a job done, they must have been pretty sure of the timing. Ka. I guess we know the answer to who paid though I haven't read that part yet, maybe it says Sayre, but Eddie's thoughts on the matter are "someone loaded him up with dough and told him [Balazar] to go buy the farm. As many out-of-town goons as he could get. And somehow convinced him the guys they were going after deserved that kind of coverage."

I think the ambush was for Roland, Jake, Callahan and Eddie (for all of 'em). Mia left before the plan but i guess she, Walter and Sayre were sure that they won't leave Susannah behind so they were there waiting.

About how they knew where i guess it was Walters job to know such things, that the manni can "re-open" the doors in a time given.

And now about the "when". I guess Walter knew ~for how long the magic exists in the cave and the ambushers just waited till they came. (isn't too mad idea because the manni weren't sure that the magic IS there after 1 single night).

For the part - How were they ready for gunslingers.. if it's would have been Jake and Callahan they'd still face a gunslinger (better to be prepared for many - although even one would create a mess).

Late in the book, 13th Stanza, section sixteen, in the dining room, Mia seems as surprised or more so than Susannah when see shes the skin behind the mask of the low man and low woman. Susannah feels genuinely sorry for Mia at this point. "Yes, Mia had lied and betrayed; yes, she had tried her best to get Eddie and Roland killed."

Around the same place in the story, the second time on the allure, it is Mia who calls Susannah to her dogan, the allure, Mia's dogan. And perhaps just as Susannah was able to communicate with Eddie in Susannah's dogan, Mia was able to communicate with others through her dogan.

As to the idea that probably generated the question, since the two pairs were sent to the places the other pair intended to go...I dunno, maybe it relates to the door that was used, some kind of baleful influence.

I almost submitted that Susannah got the pair from Sayre's call but it wasn't so easy

The way I understood it was that Roland and Eddie were expected to go to the writer, because it was such an important job, but that is why they swapped roles and wanted to go after suze. To catch who ever would interfere off gaurd... but the door whether it be ka or w/e, decided they were wrong and switched them back...

So basically to me, it was a fluke... if Pere and Jake ended up at the general store, like they were suppose to, they would have run into balazaar's gang anyway.

I have no idea if that is right, that is just what i think
