I thought he was getting the Sphere proof of The Gunslinger that Hutch showed us a little while ago.

I think he's planning to win the Grand Prize in the big charity giveaway. That will certainly be a one-of-a-kind item. Although I guess that wouldn't fall under the category of proofs.

Here are the "Final Galley" pages for THE SHINING. It is a very early state of the book and probably the last state to be done before the bound states.

It consists of 156 pages. Each page is 6" wide and 24" long. They are divided into 13 sections stapled along the top edge. Each section contains 10 to 20 pages.

Each page has "Final Galley" printed at the top and contains the text of about three pages of the final book.

    A large stack of pages:

Some of the pages unfolded to show the unusual long size:

    Page one:

The tops of some of the pages:

    Introductory pages:

Errors still remain to be corrected. "Prefactory Matters" is changed in the final book to "Prefatory Matters." I suspect there are other typographical errors as well.

I'm trying to find out some more info about this, i.e. multiple copies done vs. only one, etc. but that is about all I know right now.

I don't know all the details (names, etc.). Purchased several years ago by Mark Anderson at Copper Dragon Books from someone in the publishing/reviewer business who was also a sci-fi fan. He had a large box of sci-fi proofs and this was in it. Mark sold it a few years ago to a King collector. The King collector is now selling his collection and I bought it from Mark. When he offered to sell it to me I thought about it for.....oh, maybe a nanosecond.

    Congratulations on your find. Amazing!
I don't know if this will help in your search, but I have worked in the printing trade since 1980. Back then most typesetting was done on IBM Golfball machines which were basically souped up typewriters with the ability to use interchangeable fonts.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Selectric_typewriter

The high end versions though had the ability to save the typed information to spools of paper or cards in binary code. These spools or cards were then fed into a large processor containing spools of paper which processed the information. The typed information emerged as copy on a long roll of paper similar to your galley proof. You could process in two state - final copy, which was print quality, and proof, which was low quality, for proofing purposes.

I could be wrong, but your galley proof looks very similar to what I worked with. The processing stage used to take quite a while - a business card or letterhead would take maybe 25-30 minutes, so imagine how long 156 pages x 24" would take to process! I would be very surprised if multiple copies were output, certainly of the final galley, when they're very close to signing off on the job.
Anyway I'm rambling now. Congratulations again!

The other day when we all wondering what you were going to post, I was thinking to myself, "I bet it's the one and only final galley proof of The Shining."

    Not.

Amazing, Bob, thank you so much for sharing. Wow.

And thanks Clacke for educating us on where this item fits into the whole process.

    Thanks for the info Clacke.

So guys, does anyone have the binary code cards of The Shining?

That would have made a good April Fool for Bob. Someone claiming they had these.

    Hi Dilly,

As you can see, we can get a bit bristly if a new member appears to have only joined for the purpose of advertising their wares. I guarantee you that there are many members here who watch eBay regularly, so any SK item will be noticed anyway - heck, we probably have members that are already bidding on your auction.

If you are a Stephen King fan, Dark Tower aficionado, and/or an SK collector, please join in any of the many discussions here at TDT.com that catches your fancy. Then the occasional post about an item for sale will be met with much more enthusiasm.

    Thanks, and welcome to TheDarkTower.com!

I did not mean to cause offence or upset anyone. I am genuinely interested in it's value and did not try to hide the fact that I am selling the item. Also, is there really any harm in giving SK fans the opportunity to view and bid on a rare SK item to complete/add to their collection. Although I am not a avid SK fan I did enjoy the books and movies that I have read and seen and I respect anyone with an interesting hobbie or interest. Thank you for your responses. Dilly

    Hi Dilly,

As one who is currently bidding on your auction, I don't want to offer an opinion on its value. It'll go for what it goes for.

There aren't a lot of us King collectors who go actively for the proofs, so it'll be interesting!

    John
