Extremely tough, but I have to go with The Gunslinger. I love WaG and The Wastelands, but I have a hard time putting any of the titles ahead of the first. I love the sparseness, the pacing (in addition to the backtracking introduction to the piece), the glimpse into Roland's individual travels before he reestablishes ka-tet, and of course the meeting with Walter. I wasn't thrilled with "Little Sisters," but I would be eternally grateful to S.K. if he published some more stories which took place in between the fall of Gilead and Tull.

Good to have another Gunslinger fan. It's very useful if it's your favourite. When you finish the last book you can't help and you start to re-read the series again because your favourite book is coming.

    Roland would have understood.

I am surprised at the results I see here. It's always been my experience most DT fans are most unanimous on DOTT as the best and WaG or SoS the worst. It warms my heart that WaG is leading by so much. Y'all have hearts after all.

I picked The Waste Lands, but it could as easily have been any of four others, they're so great.

Much to the chagrin of certain bears.

I think I agree with this fully. WaG and SoS are the 2 books I like the least. So bears and jackalopes unite!

Wolves of the Calla for me...

The Commala dance did it for me! It was beautiful! Also learning about Callahan and his life after 'salem's Lot..

The Waste Lands, and The Drawing of the Three come in closely after...

The Wolves of the Calla is no where near my favorite of the series. However, the Commala and Callahan's backstory are some of my favorite pieces of the series. Probably because 'Salem's Lot is one of my favorite books

bears' order is exactly the same!

Ask not what bears can do for you, but what you can do for bears. (razz)

I used to like W&G the best, but The Gunslinger has made it's way to the top for me now. I really like reading (or listening to on audiobook) Walter O'Dim. He just cracks me up, always mocking.

    Drawing of the Three.

It's where the story first introduces the doorways to other worlds. It starts off with Roland getting effed up on the beach, alone and dying. His race to survive, his drawing of Eddie and Susannah, how they all learn to "live together, or die alone". Amazing. Not to mention, i love how Roland saves eddie from Customs, the shootout scene at Balazar's, and the way Detta/Odetta come together. It was very clever. And we got a deep look into the lives of Eddie and Susannah, who they were, how they came to be the way they are. I loved all of it.

Totally irresponsibly off topic here, but it's great to see you back with us, my friend.
