On the other hand, they'd be right at home in a sequel to Super Mario Bros.

This is a great story. Unfortunately, I just read that the guy passed away the other day. If you get a chance, read up on the guys life. He sounded pretty interesting. I guess he was influential in bringing Asian cinema to America and even had a role as an extra in Kill Bill.

I don't think anybody has mentioned it, probably because nobody cares, but am I the only one that thinks Jodie Foster is undeserving of the Cecil B. DeMille award that she received at the Golden Globes.

I think she's had a nice career, but there are some legendary names on that list.

Shameless self promotion here because I was an extra in this movie and "died" in 8 or 9 different places. Even made the IMDB page as an (uncredited) Secret Service Agent.

Mark Webb's sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man has found its villains: Jamie Foxx as Electro and Paul Giamatti is in talks to play Rhino.

I knew about Electro/Jamie Foxx. Giamatti would be odd. That first movie was ultimately not too good.

I love Giamatti, but as Rhino? wtf? Rhino is supposed to be an impressive specimen, not a short, flabby middle aged guy.

And yeah, that first movie was mediocre. They should have changed a few things up, it was essentially a remake of the first.

I really enjoyed The Amazing Spiderman. I was not a fan of the previous films. Mainly because I hate Tobey Maguire and feel he is one of the worst actors of his generation. I far prefer Andrew Garfield who played a tougher, cooler Spiderman. I also love Emma Stone.

If they had changed a few things up, it could have been so much better. I wanted to like it. I tried. I was never entirely satisfied with the Raimi version, but now I find that I still prefer it. Neither measures up to the original comics, really. This was closer, in some ways... but Spider-Man isn't really all tough and cool after all.

The Rhino is such a big guy in the comics that it will have to be done with CGI like The Hulk, so it doesn't really matter the shape of the guy who's head is used. The Rhino of the comics is 6'5" and weighs 710 lbs. I think they can manage it. The main thing with Rhino is that he needs to be really dumb...........like annoyingly dumb and I think Giamatti can pull it off. I'm not sure if I have ever heard Giamatti do a Russian accent, though.

I have still never even watched the first Amazing movie for some reason, so I am not super excited about this movie so far.

Most the roles I've seen him in were really smart guys. It's definitely against type.

I liked some parts of the first Amazing more than Raimi's trilogy: Lizard's motivation was sufficiently comic book sci-fi, the visuals and the heavy involvement of OsCorp. My complaints are the crane stuff plus a couple of scenes that felt useless, like the milk scene. However, Spider-Man 2 is still the best Spider-Man movie imo.

That's pretty much my opinion on super-hero movies so far. But I haven't seen Dredd yet.

I don't think it'd be in that list, simply because I wouldn't call Dredd a super-hero, just ultimately a cop with a really cool gun. I'd say it would definitely be in my top 10 comic book movies, though. Good list, anyway, although I'm just a little surprised at Watchmen being so high.

It's so hard to define. Is The Punisher a super-hero?

And Luke Skywalker, although he originated in film, has sold a lot of comic books over the decades... and he does have super powers... fights for justice... I always wonder if characters like that should be counted as "super-heroes" too.

Beyond the semantic question, I guess I'm probably the odd man out even considering Watchmen, Dredd, and Hellboy alongside more conventional feel-good tales of heroics. But I'm no longer really a regular fan, anyway.

Personally, I like to go for either "comic book movie" or "comic book adaptation". It's a slightly broader canvas than "super-hero movie", but not so broad that anything can apply.

As for Luke Skywalker - yes, an excellent example of how in some cases, it can be hard to definte what a super-hero is, especially a number of my favourite characters in fiction outside of comic books. Hmm, definitely food for thought, anyway. Or maybe just some bloggage.

I just give them the all purpose handle of "comic book movie", anything else is just splitting hairs really.
