Momma told me there would be DAYS like this. SHe is coming back around, though...to put things back the way they should be. HIS story? Nah...we've had enough of that.
Is it 205?
That is one answer.
I like 65.
EDIT:
If all the pieces have squares on the bottom sides, then the number would go up by 32, then slowly down.

And the board is a square too.
All that's left of what we were is what we have become.
Well, here's how I figured it...
64 1x1 squares
49 2x2 squares
36 3x3 squares
25 4x4 squares
16 5x5 squares
9 6x6 squares
4 7x7 squares
and 1 8x8 square
That makes 205...
Some older individual chess pieces have square bottoms. Thirty-two to begin with, then they start dropping off.
What about the edge surface of the board, or whatever material, the game is printed upon?
Most boards have an indention from the edge of the main board. Or, is the vehicle not counted?

How about the "squares" playing the game???
All that's left of what we were is what we have become.
The original question though was how many squares are on a chess board. This implies a standard chess board.
To be fair and reasonable one has to conclude you meant just any chessboard, which would negate features of some chessboards because they're not universal. It is the only way to make the question answerable beyond ...well, some boards have this many squares.
And all those squares you mention would certainly not be included in your own original answer of 65.
Is this riddle solved?

I reckon thought there was some debate.
