Okay... question. Watching The Family of Blood (Season 3 Episode 10) and I had my first moment that pulled me out of the story. I must have missed something and will have to watch the episode again, but... why did this episode even happen? Other than to show us a different side of the Doctor's character...

Multiple reasons, really. For one thing, story wise: well, as the ending confirmed,
    Spoiler:
because the Family had such short life spans, the Doctor decided to be 'kind' and at least give them a chance and let them die quickly and naturally, and it was his best chance of hiding from them rather than deal with them directly. Instead, they decided to hunt him down and kill a lot of people in the process, so instead, he doesn't kill, he lets them suffer forever.

Another reason is that the story was based on a novel originally written for the 7th Doctor (which, despite not really being canon anymore, I'd love to read - the 7th Doctor was so much more alien than Tennant's Doctor, so the contrast between human John Smith and Time Lord 7 would be an even bigger contrast than what we saw in the TV episodes), and it was one of the most popular novels for fans at the time, so it seemed like a good idea for the TV writers to get the original writer to adapt it.

And there's another reason, which I won't go into detail, but I'll just say that there's a little detail that becomes very important by the end.

mystima: sorry, other than on blu-ray/dvd, I don't know where you can find Miracle Day to watch. I'm actually re-watching it myself on blu-ray due to having the complete Torchwood collection. Interesting to see the journey that Torchwood has taken, after re-watching the whole series in between series of Doctor Who. Both of which changed radically over time, it has to be said.

It's one of my favourite stories, for so many reasons, big and small - the love story between John and Joan and the tragedy between the two, the shooting of the scarecrows with the school boy music, the contrast between the very human Smith and the very alien Doctor when he does come back and has one last conversation with Joan, the fate of the Family, Martha dealing with racism, seeing why the Doctor cannot have an ordinary life etc. I wasn't surprised at all when, in over 45 years and 200 stories (at the time) in a Doctor Who Magazine poll, it ended up in the top 10. Along with Waters of Mars, one of my favourite stories of the 10th Doctor (ironic, considering he wasn't in it much, technically).

And yep, that's the one! Loved the end of series 3. I remember going, "OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG" at that moment. Definitely one of my favourite cliffhangers in the history of the show.

I've re-watched it three times now... hoping that one bit would sit better with me. I like the episode.... the character development (this was the first time I really liked Martha) and everything after the first few minutes = absolutely awesome. I love the narration and the greater impact of the events in this episode (I watched into the next series too)... but I still have that same initial feeling that something doesn't ring true at the beginning. And my question still stands...

It's frustrating to both love the episode and still be bothered by that. I guess it's just because - with all the ridiculous things that have happened up to this point - this is the first time my brain wasn't able to justify something.

I will have to see if I can find the novel, because I'd love to get more background on the story. Thanks for letting me talk it out... lol

Any time, I'm always eager for any Who discussion (as you've probably guessed)!

I've heard the original novel is pretty continuity heavy, being in the middle of a series of novels in the 90s that aimed to continue the story of the 7th Doctor after the original series was cancelled. From what I've heard, there is a clearer motivation for the Doctor becoming human - it's less of a genuine necessity to protect himself and more due to understand humans better, especially after one of his companions had gone through a terrible loss (this being at a point in his life when the Doctor was becoming far more alien and far more about the 'greater good' than he had been for a long, long time).

I've started reading the New Adventures a few months ago, but decided to put them on hold and just focus on listening to the audios and watching the TV series to get my fix of Who. I must admit, I'm really keen to read more, as the characterisation of the Doctor in the novels sounds way, way darker than what we saw in Who. I listened to a direct adaptation of one of them, Love & War, and, without going into detail, the Doctor really wrecks the relationship with his companion in the story, all for the 'greater good', and as a result it's got some of my favourite 7th Doctor quotes:

"Why did you treat her so badly?" "Because I had to." "That's not good enough." "It's the best I can do."

And, my all-time favourite for showing just how much the Doctor is prepared to sacrifice:

    "I fight monsters. I win."

As a result, 7's actually become one of my favourite Doctors, even if McCoy isn't one of my favourite actors to have played the Doctor, if that makes sense.

This line here and your mentions of the Doctor being more alien and greater good brings to my mind his "Time Lord Triumphant" exchange and actions during the latter part of Waters of Mars.

Oh, that was beautiful. Fucking love that moment. It's why The Waters of Mars is up there with Human Nature as one of my favourite Tenth Doctor stories.

Yeah, I've seen a few of those fan-made trailers. Some really excellent stuff. I especially like the ones that brilliantly edit 50 years into about 2 minutes (the "Regeneration" one that uses the Man of Steel theme is especially effective).

As the countdown continues, and with just 11 days to go, he's something we can enjoy in 2: Doctor Who Magazine's 50th Anniversary Special.

    Spoiler:

This looks like the most jam-packed issue yet! I especially like the little "1st anniversary" bonus.

It just looks so amazing, doesn't it? This is the best time: not the anniversary day itself, but that last big push of sheer build up to it!

    Spoiler:
Finally, my Doctor has a regeneration scene, and he went out like a boss ("Four minutes? What if I get bored?" :') ) Even better: with one line, Moffat made over 10 years of audio seasons canon. "Charley, C'Rizz, Lucie..."

I'm actually super glad it wasn't in the special - yes, the prequel was partly done to show us just how John Hurt really is the Doctor (or at least, the same Time Lord), but those 6 minutes were a great way of showcasing what's so great about McGann's Doctor, and really neatly resolves his story - and, to an extent, the story of the classic era by the breaking the Doctor and making him give up his name and his promise to go to war - but it isn't overshadowed by Smith or Tennant. This is very much McGann's episode, his long overdue closure. He will continue to play the part, but a vital piece of Doctor Who history has finally been shown. And oh boy, was it worth the wait.
