Hyraxia has just put a bunch of their SK items on ebay, starting at £0.99, including a signed first edition of Carrie!
That's going to be fun to watch next sunday around this time.
"One day you're going to figure out that everything they taught you was a lie."
Haha, why not try reducing your prices first? Hyraxia posts SK books with prices way too high, leaves them for a long time, then BAM!, everything auctioned starting at 0.99 cents. Why not back the prices off a little bit first? You know, try to find a middle ground? It makes me think they’ll just have a schill dropping ‘reserve price bids’ at the end of the auctions.
Looking for:
- Philtrum Press Eyes of the Dragon RED #165
- Fine Viking Eyes of the Dragon proof
I bid on one of them. I'll never get it, of course.
I'm sure if there is intelligent life somewhere out there in the universe, they are wise enough to stay away from us.
And the people bowed and prayed, to the cell phone god they made...
Could Hyraxia be getting out of the Stephen King business? Looks like this is most of his stock, everything that's indeed been up for a long time.
Hi all,
I just thought I'd pop on to notify the readership of the auctions, but seems they've already been spotted - thank you Vincent.
To respond to a few remarks above. All the books came from a collection we took on consignment last year. We sold 80% of the collection and this is the remaining 20%. We no longer take consignments and have an agreement that anything remaining in this collection would be auctioned off.
As to prices being way too high, it's simply not the case, rather the higher the price the smaller your pool of potential buyers. It becomes a case of when the book sells and not if. This is evident in the collection having mostly sold within a short period of time. Had we owned this collection ourselves we wouldn't have been auctioning them, but we have a duty toward the owner to achieve a good price in a timely fashion. This plays into the idea of them being on the market for 'a long time', nine months is not a long time in the world of rare books. We start to think about reducing prices usually after around four or five years.
As to shill bids, that's simply unfounded. I understand that there's a lot of deep-seated mistrust of eBay buyers and sellers, I deal with it regularly, but to jump to that conclusion without due consideration is thoughtless. We've spent many years building relationships and a reputation, something we wouldn't risk. I've known a good number of the readers here for a good number of years, back from the days of Ceri and SK Fakes. If there's one thing I would attest to it's that the fakers, shillers and shortcutters never last it out.
Our auctions will succeed on the basis of there being a good number of good titles offered with good starting prices. Some of the books will exceed the prices they were previously offered at, some will reach a fraction of those prices, most will achieve probably 60-70%.
And finally, we're not getting out of the King game exactly, but we are scaling it back and no longer actively seeking books.
Any questions, just ask.
Simon.

Correct me if I’m wrong but you’re saying Hyraxia sets the market value? Or are you saying that Hyraxia is simply ok with waiting for someone who doesn’t know your prices are much higher than market value?
I’m new to the world of King collecting. Just wondering, how long has Hyraxia been in the business of selling rare books?

On a side-note, I’ve dealt with Hyraxia a bit over the years (on primarily non-King items) and found Simon to be very helpful, straightforward, and open to negotiation. I’ve also liked dealing with them...
No, we don't set the market value, rather there isn't a market value as such, there's a range of prices within which collectors can be induced to buy a book. The same book can sell on the same day for £200 and £1000, depending on where it's sold and who's in the market for a copy. That's not to say that a collector shouldn't have in mind the notion of how much a book is worth; and every collector and dealer's value will be different.
And no, we're not OK with waiting for someone who doesn't know our prices are higher. Firstly, our prices are not higher than the average asking/selling price. With this last collection of King books we targeted the middle of the market. A number of our books sold within the trade (for example, our SL Christine went to another dealer who listed it, and sold it, for close to £2000). Across the board we're cheaper than most of our colleagues. Secondly, the vast majority of our clients know that they can get the books we offer cheaper (we have to source them from somewhere), they buy from us because they don't want to go hunting, they like working with us, they benefit from our experience, reputation and guarantees. We are happy to wait to get the right price for a good book, but not if it means deceiving buyers.
We've been selling rare books for 20 years.
