For someone new to the book covering game (I received most of my big ticket items already covered, but I could use a handful)... What specific items should I buy- is it one size fits all?

I buy the Just a fold III covers, either 10x21 or 10x23. Either will fit a standard sized hardcover dustjacket - the wider ones are good for thicker books (ie. More pages), as their dustjackets are also wider.

I also get 9’ covers and 12’ covers for smaller hardcovers and oversized hardcovers, respectively - good for some small press books that aren’t standard sized.

The Just a Fold is “adjustable” - you fold the cover lengthwise to fit the book height, along perforations. With a bit of practice they can look very nice, although the paper backing does add some thickness to the book.

I have one of these, mine came from Forrest Ackerman's collection (who was the Special Guest along with King), it even has a handwritten note from him on it. May not seem like a super valuable item to most, but just try finding event posters from when King did "headlining" events in the 70's and 80's! Next to impossible! So I'll be hanging onto my flyer (proudly framed), until the King Museum comes knocking on my door some day. Hahah

Ari - No..the convention flyer is just that, a promo advertisement or "poster" for the event. I however have never seen a program book for this event which might include something by King, would love to find one someday even if he doesn't have anything in it.

I have one that is signed but not dated. Plus my DJ, I would say is in better shape then that because it's only missing the "D" in the word Double Day on the spine of the DJ. Although it does have some Spine lean.
I wish I knew how much it was worth.

My CARRIE is dated 9/8/78, but the 8 has a 9 written over it, or the 9 has an 8 written over it. I have no idea why King did that. I bought it from L.W. Currey so I assume it is real. The dust jacket is not quite flawless, but it is close.

I've bought from Currey before too! I think my Carrie is dated 4/14/78. I think it's the earliest non-inscribed Carrie, but premium has yet to be seen for that distinction.

I think that you are a bit harsh. The books may have been already slightly damaged when they reach them. And it's only a 30 dollar books for them. And slightly more (I guess with shipping) for the buyers
Sure it would be better not damaged, but for the original buyers that was a hell of a great deal.

Yeah, it's possible they were already damaged. That's a fair point I didn't think of. It just seems to me that they were trying to get hundreds of books out the door in the quickest, easiest way possible without consideration for condition. I don't think I've ever had a book that wasn't a paperback come to me in a padded envelope.
