And it is a boring, bland slipcase with nothing on it. lol

I think the book is both signed, and unsigned.

At this rate, the thing might fetch $5K.

It is a true first. Unfortunately he shipped it in a box without any bubble wrap or peanuts. Both corners of the front board got bumped.

On the positive side, I contacted the seller, and he is refunding the money and said I can keep the book.

In the future, copy this quote, and post it to the ADD A MESSAGE option Paypal gives you:

Please ship in a sturdy cardboard box big enough to allow for at least two inches of padding (foam peanuts, bubblewrap, etc) on all sides of the book. Please pack tightly so book can't move at all once box is sealed. Condition is VERY important to me. Thanx

It will show up in their Paypal email like this:

Anything longer than what I have written above will be cut off.

And then, just to drive the point home, I send a separate message through ebay with a slightly longer version of the note:

Please ship in a sturdy cardboard box big enough to allow for at least two inches of padding (foam peanuts, bubblewrap, etc) on all sides of the book. Please pack tightly so book can't move at all once box is sealed. Condition is VERY important to me. Feedback will be left upon receipt. Thank you.

He said he usually ships in a bubble wrap envelope. He put it in a box to protect it.

I do ask sellers to package carefully. I suppose giving them specific instructions might help. I'll give it a try.

I bought a book from him, he said the dust jacket was like new but it had lots of little stress rips on the front of the dust jacket. I guess everyone has a different definition of like new.
Also it wasn't packed very well.

That's crazy to me, especially since I saw lettered edition offered for $3500 not that long ago. I wouldn't pay that kind of a premium for an unopened box.

What if it is damaged inside, or worse, not inside?
It's an eBay auction, if either of those events occurred, Buyer protection would kick in and you would get your money refunded.
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King
