I voted Memento. Both were great movies and very entertaining to watch. But, to me, Memento was more clever. Sure, you might say "gimmick" rather than clever, but I liked the freshness of the approach. Batman, while a very good Batman, is still "Batman."

I agree that Memento is more clever, but you're doing a grave disservice to TDK by calling it "just a Batman movie". It operates at a level much much higher than just adhering to comic book tropes.

It's not so much that it was "just a Batman movie." I did call it a "great movie." It's just that it seems that everyone and his brother has written a Batman story of some sort, spanning 50+ years. No matter how entertaining the movie is, it's not giving us an original concept. That doesn't make it bad. I'll watch the next Zatoichi film or Wong fe-hung film, no matter how many times the stories surrounding these characters have been made into movies. But Memento gave me something much more original. That tipped the scales here.

Yeah but you can't hold an icon's longevity against him/her. The character of Batman has had stories written about him for +50 years because he is such a fascinating character with rich mythos that has lend himself to wildly interpretations throughout the decades. Neo noir, sprawling epics, science fiction. He's been painted in many different canvases by many different painters.

I too love innovative stories, but innovation in and of itself doesn't necessarily warrant higher praise. A film attempting to build upon groundwork that has been established by other stories is just as deserving.

Dark Knight is a great film. There's no argument there, but I still debate with myself if it's put on such a pedestal because of how truly great it is, or because of the tragedy surrounding Ledger's death. For me, his untimely death adds to his performance.

Let me spare you the conundrum; it's the former.

    I'm not sure about that.

For me, when I think of the 2000s, I think of The Lord of the Rings. It was a dominant pop-culture force.

That's fine, we're not judging this tournament on whether or not they're a dominant pop culture force. We're judging them as films.

If you want to use that metric we might as well shoehorn the Harry Potter films into the finals.
