Spirited Away needs more, much more. It's one of the best films of 2001 and the whole decade really. It should be in the playoffs, not out in the second round.

Yes, I agree. It really should make it to the finals. Are Myazaki films just not widely seen by the members here? I'm shocked that this and Howl's aren't doing better.

I've had Match Point in my queue for forever. Is it good enough to make it a priority?

Yes but I love all his films, even the ones I don't love so I'm biased but I would definitely have it in his top five. It's his sexiest and most humorless film (except maybe Interiors as far as humorless goes).

Yes, I'd recommend Match Point as well. I don't normally watch his films but I really enjoyed that one.

He does a neat thing with his actors. He gives them only the pages of script that they have lines on so the actors only know their characters and never the entire plot except of course for the leads. I find it definitely adds a bit of something to his work.

Oh wow, I never knew that. Does he do that for all his films? I can see how you would get a more honest reaction out of an actor doing that versus them acting how they're supposed to act.

As far as I know he's done it with most of his films because I hear the actors being interviewed and they think they are making an entirely different picture then what they finally see on the big screen. Can you imagine some of the actor's surprise when they saw Midnight in Paris thinking they were making a period drama?

CoM is another movie that I just never understood the hype for.

The hype is well-earned. It's a fantastic piece of filmmaking. Some of the long takes are masterful.

Are you guys fucking serious with Children of Men? Look up any list of best movies of the 2000s and Children of Men will be on there. I know this is a strong group, but come on.

Black Hawk Down is a generic 2000s war film and Spirited Away is great, but I'm not sure I see where it distances itself from Miyazaki's other films. They all kind of feel the same to me.

As for the Mist, I love King, but you guys have to calm down. 16 votes?

Honestly Black Hawk Down is a lot better than people give it credit for. I think Cinefix does a really good job of talking about Black Hawk Down on their action movies list video.

Agree. And the directors cut just adds those little parts that make it even better. IMHO.

Black Hawk Down is one of my favorite war flicks and any time I see that it's on, I watch it until the end. Very underrated. CoM is a masterpiece but that's no reason to hate on BHD.

That's probably it. I don't watch films for how they are filmed, I watch them for the story.
If you watch for a story then you're just judging a script. Films are visual. How they're filmed is far more important (which includes performances). The script is the bedrock. And Children of Men is a far more captivating story than Black Hawk Down imo. Black Hawk Down in a fine movie, but Children of Men is a masterpiece. It's in plenty of top 10 and 20 lists for the decade. It's the best film in this group by a significant margin. The only other film with equal clout here is Spirited Away.

I don't hate it. It's a good war film. It's not even in the same ballpark as Children of Men as a film.

Black Hawk Down has tons of great actors, but I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters like I do in other war films like Saving Private Ryan.

I don't really think you're supposed to in Black Hawk Down. That movie strives to make you feel like you are there with them, part of the unit. You're supposed to feel a connection to the unit as a whole not necessarily the individual members of the unit. I won't argue with you about Children of Men though, it's definitely the best movie in this group. Black Hawk Down I think probably just has a bit of a broader appeal, in the sense that it's probably just generally had more eyes on it than Children of men has.
