I really think EWS is a masterpiece. I have it as my number one film of 1999 and the 1990s as a whole. Yes, I'm serious. This is an amazing achievement in hallucinatory dreamspaces with no special effects, just cinematography and music. It's a unique experience, even for Kubrick. It sucks that the film is not more respected and most of the focus is due to off-screen stuff between the two stars and or their director. What's on the screen is astounding and it's one of my favorite films of all time.

Yeah, as I mentioned in another thread, the off-the-screen stuff seemed to distract from the film.

I am surprised to hear how much you love the film. When it comes to Kubrick, it's not one of the films you hear people talk about as one of their favorites.

It's a pity. I couldn't have voted for it anyway, because I never watched The Boondock Saints, but I have re-watched Eyes Wide Shut and liked it a lot more this time. Although I can't say I even now understand what people see in it. I totally agree with Mae that it is "an amazing achievement in hallucinatory dreamspaces", but it doesn't seem enough. Feels like, so to speak, subtext without the text. I think bears need text too.

Ask not what bears can do for you, but what you can do for bears. (razz)
When one is in agreement with bears one is always correct. (mae)

    bears are back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I enjoy EWS as a sensory experience but that's pretty much it.
