Weak in what way though? In terms of thought-provoking, highbrow films, maybe. In terms of highly memorable properties, no way.

I've compiled my usual Top 30 for each year of the 1980s so I technically have 300. There are plenty of both mainstream and more art-house stuff, I don't think the '80s were that much different to be honest. Maybe a little, sure. If anyone's looking for ideas, here are those lists:

I just looked at my list. I'm at about 110, with probably half being comedies.

Looking at Mae's lists I realize (like with most other decades) there are a ton of popular movies that I've heard of but just have never gotten around to watching.

That's precisely what I mean. Too much schlock, bad slasher films, john hughes. It has its gems though obviously but the decade as a whole has a lot of empty calories.

This is pretty much how I felt in the 90's tournament, when The English Patient lost to Robin Hood: Men in Tights in the first round!!

Dekalog will have to be considered ten different films I suppose?

Dekalog as such wouldn't be eligible, I don't think. It was specifically made for TV and each episode is under an hour, so effectively short films if anything. Fanny and Alexander was also intended to be a TV series but was actually first screened as a long feature film. But A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love would be fine to nominate, as those were episodes expanded to feature length and screen as movies.

Have you seen Pixote (1981)? Excellent, heartbreaking film.
