First of all, yes we are.

Second of all, thank you, Mae. You have once again done an amazing job with the tournament. Your organizational skills are second to none.

Lastly, it shocks me how fast these things go by. In some ways, it seems like so long ago when we started the nomination process and in others, it seems like just yesterday.

Thanks Mae for everything you've done. I know it's an immense amount of work to organize it. It's been a ton of fun as usual

I find it very rewarding seeing people voting and commenting on the polls. It's a small thing but it brings me a little bit of joy. It sure is a lot of work to plan this and make the polls, but I have fun doing it, and I hope we all will continue having fun with it for the next few years, because unless I physically am unable to continue, I want to see this though to the end with all ten decades, and then an all-time best-of finale.

Well as the first post in this thread talks about, the idea is to do each decade, and doing ten decades seems like a good number. Also, narrative feature films as we know them started being made in the 1910s, but I don't think it would be fair to lump 1920s films with those from the 1910s and earlier, even though there are certainly a few pre-1920 films out there, like Intolerance, J'accuse, Cabiria, and of course the infamous The Birth of a Nation, but they are few and far between. Most films back then were what we would call short films now, the longest being 30-40 minutes.

Once we do the 1980s next and then the 2010s, we'll go back in time decade by decade from the 1970s to the 1920s, and that will make it ten full decades of movies. A century, in other words. I know the nominating process and the voting for those last few decades might not be as robust, but I sincerely hope we'll manage to pull it off. Those that are interested in the 1920s tournament, what are your thoughts on including some of the films from the 1910s? I only really know of a handful of pre-1920s films but films like Cabiria are amazing. Plus, most of them are freely available on YouTube and elsewhere online.

I think we should significantly decrease the number of films for anything below 1950. Most users on here weren't even alive.

Yes, I think we should include pre 1920s films in with that decade. That way nothing will be left out.

I adore the time period of 20s to 50s. I've probably seen over a thousand movies from those years. TCM was my only friend for a few years there and I took full advantage.

I'm going to be completely useless once we get into the 60s or older. Pretty much the only movies I've seen from those eras are the Disney cartoons.

Although there may be one or two that I've "watched" due to MST3K like Santa Claus vs The Martians, Manos the Hands of Fate or This Island Earth. But that's about it.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

LMAO, I am a MSTie from way back and that made me smile. I actually got to see Manos in the movie theater when Rifftrax did it a few years back. Oh and SC V. The Martians too. Good lord what a crappy movie that is! Love it!

I was thinking something similar, feev. I have a feeling that pre-1950/1960, there's not going to be a ton of participation.

That wouldn’t be fair to the older movies for a lot of reasons. We won’t have as many spots of course, but there are still tons of great classic movies from the 1940s and ‘30s everyone knows. I’m thinking we should be able to pull off at least half of the usual amount of nominations. And for the 1920s we can reduce it even more but each decade should have its own tournament and its own champion to go against all others.

I agree. I would even merge it with the 60's. I have no interest in any of the old movies... I have tried and tried. I cannot get by the acting and the old school cheap feel. I don't know.. you won't have as many noms I bet too. I won't be able to participate

I get that classic movies aren't everyone's cup of tea here, but I'm okay with maybe just half the usual voters participating in these older decades. We got around 25-30 votes thus far, so if we can get around 10-15 for these first few decades, I'll be okay with it. No one has to participate in every poll, though I wish everyone of course would! Thankfully, accessibility shouldn't be an issue with the 1920s as a lot of these movies are in the public domain and freely available on YouTube (some even in HD!). As crazy as it may sound, when we get to that last part of the tournament, some of the 1920s movies will be over 100 years old!

And that's the whole point of the tournament, to go through the first century of cinema and pick a champion of each decade, and then have these ten best of the best face each other for the title of the greatest film ever made (well of the first 100 years of movies).

A side-effect of course is everyone learning about great movies they may not be aware of. So while classic movies may not be your bag, there will certainly be some nominations that could pique your interest and lead you down a whole rabbit hole. It's just what movies do.

I too would rather keep the decades in tact. Perhaps we can cut the number of nominations in half, as there were less movies released during those time periods as well. Half seems about right.
