And I have one more book in the Forward anthology from Amazon to read that I plan to read before the year ends to complete my list

My favorite book of the year was Recursion by Blake Crouch. Runners up would be Dark Matter by Michelle Paver, The Great Alone by Kristen Hannah, and Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov.

My favorite new authors were Michelle Paver and Darcy Coates. I really enjoyed both of Michelle's books and can't wait to read her new one. And I already have one of Darcy Coates winter ghost books lined up to read after the new year.

Heather, you really killed it with reading this year. I'm so proud...and a little jealous.

Did you read any stand-out horror that you'd recommend?

And funny you mention Hark! I bought it this year to read over Christmas but never got around to it. I did read Skipping Christmas by John Grisham, though, so I did get a little holiday reading it at least.

Well the last few are technically novellas so I'm not sure I can really count them so it's probably more around 50. And out of those 50 I think I only physically read 19, the rest were all audiobooks.

I'm enjoying Hark! There's some good stories in there, but also a few blah stories so far.

I would highly recommend Dark Matter by Michelle Paver, that's my favorite horror from this past year. This is Halloween by James A Moore and The Manse by Lisa W Cantrell were also both excellent and would highly recommend adding to your list for next Halloween. And Darcy Coates, I just discovered and have been loving her books. She does ghost stories.

Thanks! I added all those to my list.

Dark Matter looks like it might be good for a "winter" read. Should I save it for a snow day?

Not as good as the original books unfortunately. I’ll still give the next one a shot.

Yeah for newcomers I’d recommend either Off Season or The Girl Next Door.

I hit my target of 25 books this year. But only by reading some very short novels – the Richard Stark novels, and Gwendy’s magic feather, for example. Other media has been attracting my attention, including this forum.

I target in 2020 will be 30 books. We’ll see how it goes.
