I've only seen 4 films nominated, and they're more obscure ones. Surprised, but not surprised to see Willem Dafoe nominated for At Eternity's Gate. He was excellent as Vincent, but I haven't heard of anyone seeing this movie besides me There's a couple films that I want to see still, but honestly most of these don't interest me in the least.
Only the gentle are ever really strong.
Wow! I don't know anyone else who has seen that film. I will post my comments about the nominations tomorrow. In the meantime, we have some business to decide before Oscar night. We haven't talked about this since after the show last year, but we floated the idea of a secondary tiebreaker. We were having tons of ties, so we instituted a tiebreaker a few years ago. Well, last year we still had a tiebreaker even with the tiebreaker already in place.
If everyone is cool with ties, we can certainly keep it with just one tiebreaker. We can also discuss a secondary tiebreaker if you'd like. Some of the ideas last year were determining the winner by who submits earlier, best of the big 6 categories, second most Oscars won. I think that was it.

Frankly, since there is no hardware involved, I see no need for any tie breaker.
Looking for FAB8 CD Number 439
Did you see that movie Mike? I'd love to hear your thoughts. I feel like it's one of those movies that came and went. I wasn't a huge fan of it, but I did think Willem was excellent in that role. He really did look like Vincent.
Only the gentle are ever really strong.
That's my feelings as well.
I haven't seen it. I remember seeing the trailer in theaters, but it never opened near me. I will have to track it down. I noticed that Cold War is opening near me at a few theaters this weekend.
In regards to the nominations, I knew going in that many of my favorite films and performances didn't have a chance to get nominated either because they came out too early or just simply got lost in the shuffle. Films and performances like Joaquin Phoenix in You Were Never Here, Charlize Theron in Tully, Leave No Trace, Toni Collette in Hereditary, A Quiet Place, Annihilation and a few more that I'm sure I'm forgetting never had a chance.
I would have liked to have seen Ethan Hawke get nominated for First Reformed, but that's the only true disappointment I had. The Best Picture nominations are no surprise, although I don't understand nominating just 8. Pawel Pawlikowski getting nominated for Best Director is the biggest surprise. I thought Bradley Cooper had that locked up.
I think more than a few of the categories are locks, but it should be fun debating in the coming weeks. I will say, I think Roma is the front runner right now.

I just want to know why Makeup and Hairstyling is always capped at 3 nominations.

Why do you guys think Hereditary was left out of the mix. That's one film that I was hoping would get some nomination. It's so much more thought provoking than what the trailers make it out to be.

Same reason Annihilation was. Small genre movie.

It's clear Hereditary was left out because it wasn't diverse enough, and also wasn't a movie about historical and powerful white people or music. If Hereditary had a bitchin concert scene, it would've gotten some love, I think.
My Current Top 5 for 2018
1. Roma
2. Leave No Trace
3. Hereditary
4. Green Book
5. Mission Impossible: Fallout

Black Panther's BP nomination is as much about luring people to their TV sets as it is about race.

Just saw Green Book. Best pic of the year imho
Wish List:
Any of the following flatsigned or inscribed-
It, Shining, Salems Lot, Mr. Mercedes, The Stand
Brother ARC, Seed ARC
I agree. Just watched the nominations tonight and I'm underwhelmed as well. Some of them were a lock for weeks, but the subject matter of most of them just don't excite me, like Heather said. Compare this to last year when there were, what seemed like, more exciting films nominated for BP: Dunkirk, The Shape of Water, etc. I would like to see A Star is Born, thought.
Yup, totally agree. I haven't seen it, but in the time and place that we're living in (especially considering the ridiculous #OscarsSoWhite thing a year or two ago), it was obvious that they were going to star nominating films based on social factors (and popularity) moreso than merit.
I've heard of Eternity's Gate, but haven't seen it. I don't even think it opened anywhere near me. But I agree with you, there's not many that interest me at all in this group of BP noms.
Yup. But you can't say that, though, because then you're racist.
Echoing your thoughts again, Mike.
And I've not seen a single BP nominated film. Or even nominated-adjacent.
However, I was surprised not to see more love (or BP noms) given to: Beale Street, Ben Is Back, Beautiful Boy, Boy Erased, and First Man.
A NEW GAME BEGINS

Black Panther is good but its inclusion is more a reflection of a modern cultural zeitgeist. It's not even the best Marvel movie.
Also, if ANY CBM should have won best picture, that film is The Dark Knight. Still the best of its kind and one of the best films of the 00's.
And yes, I'm still bitter that it wasn't even nominated that year. Fucking Slumdog Millionaire. GTFO.
I really liked Black Panther, but yes, it wasn't even the best superhero movie of the year, which was Spider-Verse. I'm fine with it being nominated but the first superhero film to be nominated for Best Picture should've been Wonder Woman last year.
I'm also shocked that Won't You Be My Neighbor wasn't nominated. It was such a good movie, and has such a wonderful positive message. Everyone should see that movie. It really deserves to be there. I also loved Three Identical Strangers. Out of the nominees, I've only seen RGB (which I did enjoy), and I really want to see Free Solo. But yeah, I thought those two if not Neighbor should at least be there.
Only the gentle are ever really strong.
No way! Get Out was much more deserving of the Best Picture Oscar nomination than Black Panther.
If Black Panther wins the Oscar for Best Picture, I may never watch again. No joke. If Beale Street Could Talk is the African American vehicle if any they should be getting behind and it doesn't even get nominated. I can't figure this shit out sometimes.

Here is the online ballot I created for this year. If someone would be so kind to double check my work to make sure I didn't make any mistakes, it would be appreciated.
