So glad they reversed that decision. But yeah it shows that they are very out of touch with what people want. I guess I just don't see their need for change. Maybe theaters on the other hand should start showing more independent or smaller films. That way people would have a much easier opportunity to see films that are nominated. And in turn more people would probably tune in to watch the awards.

It really just comes down to ratings. They want to appeal to every day move goers, but some same movie goers don't really care about the art of filmmaking. They care about what race nominees are and if their favourite pop culture extravaganza wasn't nominated for best picture, and that's pretty much it. Appealing to those people would be like McDonald's going meatless to appease vegans. New customers are pointless if you lose your old customers.

In a perfect world that would be the case.

I see that as a chicken and egg situation. Do audiences not care about smaller films anymore because their tastes have changed, or has their taste changed because they don't have access (at least theatrically) to those aforementioned films?

Oscars will use Hollywood outsiders to introduce best picture nominees

Oh, good. Because if we're tuning in to a 3+ hour show about movies, we are definitely hoping to see as many celebrities outside the film industry as possible. Are the producers of this thing really THAT out of touch?

"The producers are under intense pressure to keep the show at three hours — something that Gigliotti admitted wasn’t going to happen..."

    Well, no crap.

Industry outsiders? That makes no sense whatsoever. Sometimes when you try so hard, it backfires.

    Just keep it simple stupid.

I wonder this too. I remember years ago when it was much easier to have access to less popular films. They would sometimes show smaller or more indie films in the main theater. I feel like in recent years however the theaters have been inundated with big action or superhero movies, or kids films. And not much else. It's a shame though. I really do think more people would go see other films if they had the opportunity to, but maybe it is just that people have changed and most people wouldn't watch them? I do feel that the longer this goes on, that people will just be accustomed to these movies, and aside from us film lovers no one will care to watch smaller or foreign films, which is a shame.

This makes no sense to me? People not involved in film at all? I really don't understand these bizarre random choices they're making. I honestly don't even really care to watch it this year, which is a first for me.

Bought tickets to go see the shorts Friday night, so I'm hoping those are enjoyable at least.

I haven't seen any of the films nominated for Best Picture. The only ones I've seen that have any nominations are At Eternity's Gate, RBG, Isle of Dogs, and A Quiet Place. And I don't really have a strong desire to see any of the top nominated films. So my lack of having much interest in the nominated films, and all the drama surrounding the awards has honestly gotten me to care less about them this year. I'll still tune in, but I won't be surprised if I fall asleep early

So for those of you that have seen the nominated films, do you feel as if this is a strong batch of contenders? Or is this year a bit weaker than previous ones?

I feel it's strong, yeah. All films deserve to be here to one degree or another. I maybe would have added a few more and taken some off, but it's a very Oscary group of films, as usual. Films like Hereditary, A Quiet Place, Into the Spider-Verse, Eighth Grade, Annihilation etc. had no chance of a Best Picture nomination.

    The Rules

Oscar night is right around the corner, so I'm going to post the rules for those who might not be familiar with them. Please tell your friends from other boards to come on over and join us. The more the merrier.

You have until showtime on February 24, 2019.

IMPORTANT: Don't forget the tie breaker. It's simple: Basically, everybody will submit their choices like usual, except they will also add which film they think will win the most Oscars and give a number. In case of a tie, whomever has the closest number without going over is the winner.

Predictions have to be in by showtime, so there is no rush to post them. We still have some time before Oscar night. I myself will be waiting for the last possible moment to post my predictions.

Remember, these are just educated guesses. None of us have seen every film nominated and I doubt if anybody has seen any of the documentary short subject nominees. Just make an educated guess. Or an uneducated guess.

    Returning this year:

Returning this year will be the online ballot submission I created. Of course, ballots can still be submitted here.

Where it says "name" just put your DT.org handle, or designate in some way that you are from the Dark Tower boards. I will be sharing the same contest form with other friends and I don't want to get them confused.

You can post your picks here or you can fill out the form. Sometimes people do both so everyone can see their picks. For people who submit a form, I'm able to export a file and it does make it easier to score them at the end of the night. That said, you certainly don't have to use the form.

Oh I forgot my tiebreaker number. I guess it's Roma with 4. Don't see any other winning more.

So we went to see the shorts last night? Has anyone else seen them? I do not recommend them at all. There wasn't a single one I liked, and all of the live action ones were extremely depressing. I feel like they should have put a warning in front of one of them because it was so disturbing. I can't imagine that there were no better shorts this year. Does anyone know how they go about picking them? I really wish they had included 1 or 2 more upbeat ones to balance it out a bit. And it wasn't just us, everyone in the theater was talking about how depressing they were
Only the gentle are ever really strong.
