Default **Any help appreciated: shipping from australia to the united states

I am looking to purchase a print from someone in australia to be shipped to me in the United States. The seller is asking me how much I want him to declare that the print is valued at, which I'm assuming is because of US customs. The price I am paying is several thousand dollars, so if I tell him to value it at that price, what am I looking at in terms of Customs hassle and charges? Any thoughts or advice on the situation? Thanks for any help/advice that anyone can give me

I have bought a TON of stuff from overseas, including several items from Australia, I've never been charged US customs fee.

I believe printed material is not charged on import. (steel on the other hand has a tariff now). So you can declare whatever you want and it should not matter.

I'm happy to help anyone on here who is purchasing from Australia... Just let me know.

Side note - I'm not sure of taxes going OUT of Australia, but for items coming IN, anything from $1,000 AUD (~$750 USD) is charged 10% for Aussies. It's a bit of an issue currently, as the Aus Government are irritatingly trying to drop this threshold down to $1, for companies who earn more than $85,000 AUD in Aussie sales.

Just don't declare the value as less than the insured value. If it goes missing they will only pay the declared value.
