Default Different Publisher for Skeleton Crew & Tommyknockers

Does anyone know why Skeleton Crew and Tommyknockers were published by GP Putnam's Sons while King was still under contract at Viking?

For The Tommyknockers, at least, King’s former editor at Viking, Alan Williams, moved to Putnam and the book followed him to that imprint. (As I write in a to-be-published entry of Stephen King Revisited)
