I'm still not sure what I think about it. I'm not sure if I think it was just good or if it was great. I was taken aback by the type of film it ended up being. Outside of a few bits of creepiness, most of the movie is a fairly straightforward drama when it comes to its content. The performances are all real well done, especially Colette. The photography, sound, and set design are all excellent. There is a general sense of brooding uneasiness and dread throughout most of the film, and it reminded me a lot of The Orphanage in that respect. In terms of the sound, it really needs to be seen with surround sound because part of the experience is hearing all these little noises from all around you. It definitely cares more about being creepy than outright scary. But I do think the quality of it as a horror film is being overblown slightly. It's a good film, but I've seen better horror films in recent years that also tell a great story. I'm still not entirely sold on the ending. Lots of clues along the way, but I'm also not sure what, exactly, I should make of it. I think I need to watch it again to truly know how I feel about it as a whole.

I think the Babadook is a better horror film, but Hereditary is a better film overall. Both are similar in quite a few ways. I really need to rewatch Hereditary to know if I prefer it over The Babadook. Hereditary is a very slow film, and I think that's where I'm not quite sure where I sit. I'm going to look back, but I only count movies I have seen in 2018, that were new or recent releases (2017 or 2018 USA widespread release) and viewed in a buy a ticket-public theater, AND that I have provided a rating/capsule review in the Rate the Last Movie You Saw thread.
I believe I'm over 30 films.

It felt like it took forever at times to be a horror film. I think I kept waiting for it to get super creepy, and it never really did. It was definitely very creepy, but it was in chunks and flashes. Far more dread than creepiness.

After watching the film, I agree with this assessment. I really enjoyed it though. Looking forward to picking it up on Blu-ray.
