Up on his site. Went for $12,000. Man, and I thought $10,000 was a lot.

I better get mine up off of the floor then!
"One day you're going to figure out that everything they taught you was a lie."
$12K is insane. More power to them.
I think one thing that's notable is the overall number of bidders: 6. And at least half of them were members here! Obviously the starting bid pushed a lot of people out right away, but I would love to see how these books would do on eBay. I think many people assume that every collector knows about Betts, but that's not the case - eBay just has a much farther reach. Hence the $4050 winning bid for the numbered Misery! I think a truly public auction would realize even higher prices. Not that this wasn't a public auction, it was, in the sense that every member of the public had a right to bid, but I mean an auction that's visible or known to a greater section of the public.
I guess what I'm getting to is that I think, if anything, DRE and SE lettered editions are probably undervalued. They rarely come up for sale, and when they do a significant number of sales are private. The ones that are public are indeed available to any member of the public, but the number of collectors that are aware of them is still a fraction of the number of collectors out there. That lady paid $9000 for the IT prototype - what do you think she would have paid for the entire collection so far, and rights to future editions? (And thank you Kris for sharing that, it was really interesting! And for all I know she is the one who made the winning bid...)
Paul, major, major congratulations to you for vaulting so quickly to the top - I hope that seeing prices like these makes you feel proud!
Holey smokes!
Wanted: Human skin edition of The Book of the Dead. Will accept PC copy.
12k for a current set of Dragon Rebounds - wow!
I think the 5 books and one Portfolio I have from Paul are worth nearly as much as the rest of my collection put together!
(And I have over 50 S/L’s!!)
My children wish you many thanks Paul
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King
Really interesting and very helpful what you wrote. I thought Misery selling for $4K was circumstantial and didn’t reflect the true market value. Yet, now I think that’s exactly what it is- the true market value, based on what you’re saying. The key circumstance was that it reached a greater number of the actual size of the market.
Damn, Paul.

Hey Lotuz.
I agree with everything you said. It's surprising that's all. It's just that those are pretty amazing prices on their own. Paul has the magic and people are beginning to see that now. For those of us that are late to the party, it just seems very impressive.
Will we see another release in 2018?

Like I said in SE, I hope it's something I can get .
Hmmmmmm. Supply and Demand. That is why the price is high. If he were to charge those prices out the gate... there would be no demand, thus those prices. What he is doing is a very cool thing and it is creating a desire for his books ensuring sell outs for years to come. What your suggesting is business suicide. Just my thoughts...

Maybe. Maybe not. CD has sold out of each of their unsigned Doubleday Years deluxe editions at $1200 per and those are not nearly the quality of the Suntup limited edition of Misery (which was issued at less than half that price) let alone the lettered edition. I'm not suggesting $4000/$12,000 for Paul's next SK limited/lettered (if there is one) but I do think the ceiling is higher for SK titles if he continues to produce at the quality level that has been established.

I specifically indicated in my initial response that there isn't a market for $4000/$12,000 SK limited/lettered editions but there is likely a higher ceiling than what Misery was offered at. Maximizing the revenue on any future SK offerings will help Paul seed his non-SK titles.
