Paul should raise the price of future SE and DRB publications. Seems like he's doing the heavy lifting while others are making easy money.
Hmmmmmm. Supply and Demand. That is why the price is high. If he were to charge those prices out the gate... there would be no demand, thus those prices. What he is doing is a very cool thing and it is creating a desire for his books ensuring sell outs for years to come. What your suggesting is business suicide. Just my thoughts...
I don’t want him to raise the prices either, but I’m sure he could increase them a certain amount and not commit “business suicide.” 10%-20% I doubt would limit demand enough that the next King book wouldn’t sell out in minutes.
I agree. That isn't much at all. BUT he isn't going to be doing only King books. They would sell easy at 25% more. No question. But if you started charging $10-12K for every 26 letters and $4000 for a number. You have seriously limited the buying pool.
Paul could clearly charge a premium for SK books if he chose to do so but not for non-SK books.
Yeah $10-12K list price for lettered Kings would result in less gross sales but it would sell, just not to more than a handful (what 5 lettereds have sold at 10-12 so far?). 26 x 4 is a lot more than 5 x 10. There’s a perfect price point in there somewhere that gets Suntup more income to work with and make more beautiful books for us. Then again, I’m just talking out of my ass and don’t know Paul’s business. Just shooting the shit here, Paul.

EITHER WAY.. I want Paul to be successful and continue doing this of course. I was speaking solely on why the prices have hit the mark they have and how pricing them out the gate would not work is all.

Of course! And I agree with you pricing them that high most likely wouldn’t work out well. But yeah, just chit chatting here for the sake of conversation.

Some people buy rare books and don't even open the shipping carton.

I enjoy reading them. I enjoy the feel, smell, heft, art, paper quality, extras, etc..

I do read them carefully. I wash my hands. I sit comfortably. I don't drink, eat or smoke around them.

It's not like I read them at the beach or anything.

Definitely want to do it. Just worry about an accident. And I’ll be so worried about damaging it I don’t know if I’ll be able to enjoy it. Those qualities you mentioned sound fantastic, especially the art. I’d love to be fully immersed in the story and turn the page to be presented with amazing artwork at the point in the story it’s intended to be seen.

I just upgraded the shipping on the books so we can get them a little sooner. They are scheduled to arrive Tuesday. I'll need about 2 days to letter and pack, then they're off.

Definitely (not that I'm specifying a stratospheric increase, mind you).

I don't begrudge the secondary market for making its money, but these unique and wondrous objects won't come into existence indefinitely if the profitability and cash flows don't keep things nice and smooth for the publisher (we all know examples of publishers that have closed or imploded to the point where they still, ostensibly, sell things, but spend most of their time double-talking those from whom they've taken money and to whom they've promised books), particularly if the publisher is ever going to be free to get creative with more off-the-beaten path titles. The obvious example is any non-King works, which sell smaller numbers and garner fewer headlines, but let's say a publisher wants to get even more ambitious - for example, a multi-volume set of works of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. Something like that could be a real beauty, but if the giant sea of cash swirling around a publisher's works only splashes a small amount onto the creator, I worry that things like this can't happen, and I think we all want Suntup's creativity (as well as that of Centipede Press, and any other you care to name) to be fully unleashed.

But, to reiterate, I'm not saying tiers should be priced around the numbers we're seeing now; those are individual high water marks, not indicators of sustainable practice etc.

...but I would appreciate it if each product had a $100 edition tagging along - so schmoes like myself can still get a taste.

But what you're asking for is already being done by Suntup Press. The Misery Gift edition sold for $110. 1250 books available. If you mean the DR books, then that makes no sense. The value (and production cost) is in the materials used to rebind them. Take away that and what do you have? A first edition!
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

    To be clear:

I'm well aware of the $110 edition of Misery; that's cool and encourages me for the future. I wasn't asking for a change (as if the bottom-tier Misery was $250, for example); I was asking that Suntup not make a change with regard to the bottom tier specifically because I'd just recommended that Suntup otherwise raise its prices - I was being selfish (and admitting it, and admitting it now).

I definitely don't mean the rebounds...
