So Oscar nominations come out on Tuesday the 24th. What are some of your predictions? What gets a Best Picture nom, etc?

1) La La Land
2) Moonlight
3) Arrival
4) Silence
5) Hell or High Water
6) Manchester by the Sea
7) Lion
8 ) Hacksaw Ridge

What time are the nominations released? They've done it around noon in the past. just wondering if I need to skip class that day to watch them as I hate not watching it.
Best picture is obviously between Moonlight and La La Land. Moonlight deserves the award because its a smaller movie that's impactful and delicately made, and while La La Land would win and I'd be just as happy, it's the sort of movie you'd expect to win, which almost devalues its win.
Stone and Gosling are shoe ins for best actor/actress, though Casey Affleck might take Goslings statue away. I think Naome Harris deserves supporting actress for Moonlight. She's so good in it. I'd vote for Foster as supporting actor. I actually haven't seen a role otherwise that astounded me in terms of instant oscar buzz. Probably some great performances I haven't seen yet.
Best score will be between Moonlight and La La Land with La La Land taking it. La La Land for cinematograhy and production design. Moonlight for best original screenplay. Not sure who will win best director yet but it's between Jenkins and Chazelle. Elle will probably take foreign language film.

They will be announced at 8:18 Eastern Time. Just adjust that for Canadian time.

Not so fast. I feel it's between La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea. You can't count them out.
I think Chazelle takes it. Jenkins could take it, especially if Oscar is trying to make up for last year.

I'm not counting Manchester out, but I just don't think it has a chance against the other two. Nothing to do with movie quality, but I just don't think it has near the momentum.

Here is what my ten picks for Best Picture would be, in order of most likely to least:
- La La Land
- Moonlight
- Arrival
- Manchester by the Sea
- Hell or High Water
- Hidden Figures
- Fences
- Hacksaw Ridge
- Jackie
- Lion
In don't see Silence making it. I haven't seen it yet, and it's apparently very good, but there's been no buzz or really any good word about it at all, and no box office success.
True. My thinking is that the Academy loves Scorsese and Silence was a 20+ year passion project.
Here are my last minute predictions:
SUPPORTING ACTOR
Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight”
Ben Foster, “Hell or High Water”
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, “Nocturnal Animals"
Lucas Hedges, “Manchester By The Sea”
Dev Patel, “Lion”
I know it's Jeff Bridges that is the one getting mentioned for Hell or High Water, but it's Foster who steals the film. As much as I love Bridges, he's really kind of channeling his True Grit character. The one most likely to be wrong is Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I could see Hugh Grant stealing that spot, which sucks because Taylor-Johnson was fantastic.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Viola Davis, “Fences”
Naomie Harris, “Moonlight”
Nicole Kidman, “Lion”
Octavia Spencer, “Hidden Figures”
Michelle Williams, “Manchester by the Sea”
This group seems to be the consensus. I haven't seen Hidden Figures yet, but I could see relative newcomer Janelle Monáe taking Octavia Spencer's spot, despite the fact that Spencer is an Oscar darling.
ACTOR
Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea”
Ryan Gosling, “La La Land”
Andrew Garfield, “Hacksaw Ridge”
Jake Gyllenhaal, “Nocturnal Animals”
Denzel Washington, “Fences”
I know I'm going out on a limb here and my love for Gyllenhaal might be showing, but if he doesn't get nominated something is wrong. He was great in Nocturnal Animals, he also gave a strong performance earlier in the year in Demolition. He was snubbed big time for Nightcrawler a few years back. Lastly, his main competition at this point is Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic. I love Viggo from his Lord of the Rings days, but I'm shocked he has gained so much steam these last few months. The film wasn't very well received and his performance hardly got any attention until recently. I'm telling you, if Viggo gets it instead of Jake, it's gonna get ugly.
ACTRESS
Amy Adams, “Arrival”
Isabelle Huppert, "Elle"
Ruth Negga, "Loving"
Natalie Portman, “Jackie”
Emma Stone, “La La Land”
There's a couple surprises here and I'm sure Meryl Streep will steal a spot. I'm hoping Negga gets a nomination. I love her on Preacher and I'm really looking forward to her performance in Loving. I hear she's great.

I am really surprised O.J.: Made in America was nominated. Yes, technically it premiered theatrically, but it's a television miniseries.
No real surprises here.

LA LA LA... please. I am however thrilled for Arrival and Hacksaw. I hope one of them take it!

The only one I've seen for Best Picture is Hell or High Water. I got some catching up to do!
Start with Arrival, if it's still out anywhere.
I remember hearing before the show aired that the producers were determined to get their documentary nominated for an Academy Award. They were sure to release the film in the required amount of theaters in order to qualify. I know what you're saying, but I'm pretty sure there have been HBO documentaries that have been nominated for Academy Awards.
Arrival and Hacksaw Ridge were two of my favorite films of the year. Neither has a chance of winning Best Picture. It's really between La La Land and Moonlight. I think Manchester by the Sea might make their way into the conversation.
My thoughts on the nominations:
As Matt said, no huge surprises here. It still annoys me that the Academy can't just nominate 10 films. It's nice to see Mel Gibson get a nomination despite is history. I'm not sure what the voters saw in Viggo Mortensen. Jake Gyllenhaal should have been nominated there.
They keep saying Isabelle Huppert is the Meryl Streep of France and she must be considering she gets nominated despite the fact that her film doesn't even get a foreign film nomination. Speaking of Streep, this love affair with her has got to stop. It's utterly ridiculous that she gets nominated over Amy Adams. I was happy to see Ruth Negga get nominated though.
The other thing that annoys me is when they nominate people because they are familiar faces and past winners/nominees. Perfect example of this is Best Supporting Actor. Bridges doesn't come close to Foster in Hell or High Water, and as great has Shannon was in Nocturnal Animals, it's Aaron Taylor-Johnson that really steals the film. I would have liked to see a little more variety in the acting categories, but at least we don't have to hear any more BS about #OscarSoWhite anymore.
I'm already prepared to listen to all the La La Land haters. It's bound to happen whenever a film gets so much praise. It's a shame that people will dislike the film just because others like it, but that's the world we live in.
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing a few more of these movies, formulating opinions, making my picks and losing by 2 points to Heather.

I'm somewhat shocked with all the complaints that concerning the lack of a nom for Deadpool. Did these people really believe it would be nominated? It was great yes... but come on people! Really?
