The earthquake news one reminded me of a great old Nicolas Cage one about baby names (I searched, but could not find it).

It reminded me of one of my favorite SNL sketches of all-time. SNL loves word play.

I had to look up the word bodega. I'd never heard that before.

We just call them corner stores or convenience stores.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

The Bodega Bathroom was one of the best sketches I've seen on SNL in a decade.

Also, the ejector toilet was hilarious. I guess Mulaney has been trying to get that sketch on the air for 10 years when he was an SNL writer.

I think there was a Mother's Day one (or maybe it was just for Amazon?) that involved Fifty Shades Of Grey; that was great.

Yeah, that one was great as well. I admit though, I guess at our respective age, my wife and I preferred this year's version. Both are pretty funny though.

    https://www.wmagazine.com/story/chlo...mpressions-snl
On Thursday, Saturday Night Live announced three new featured cast members for it's 45th season: Shane Gillis, Bowen Yang, and Chloe Fineman. While the three have already made names for themselves in the comedy scene, they're not quite household names yet. Though, the later has already found quite a following for herself impersonating household names on Instagram. Since studying improv at Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles, Fineman has already established herself so fully on Instagram—her handle is @chloeiscrazy—that Emily Ratajkowski, Gus Kentworthy, Jameela Jamil, Spencer Pratt, Tommy Dorfman, and Zoë Kravitz all lost it in the comments section within hours after Fineman made the announcement.

For the uninitiated, the best place to start might be with Fineman's most viewed video to date: a truly uncanny impression of the disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. If you've also seen Tavi Gevinson's Holmes impression, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Fineman does pretty much exactly the same voice for Holmes as she does for Gigi Hadid.

For the past two years, Fineman has made a tradition out of bringing the increasingly unsettling White House Christmas decorations to life via a smoky-eyed Melania Trump. This past year, she also took a page out of Ivanka's book and observed Hanukkah.

A heads up: If you find Fineman's Melania unsettling, well, you might not want to watch her terrifying take on the 16-year-old Nebraskan YouTuber Jojo Siwa.

Fineman has already proven her skills when it comes to television, taking on Netflix hits like Natasha Lyonne's Russian Doll and Hannah Gadsby's Nanette. But that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to her cinematic oeuvre. Behold Fineman's take on Drew Barrymore, on a street art tour of Bushwick; Busy Philipps, twirling her hair; Maisie Williams, bushy eyebrowed as ever; and Jennifer Lawrence, reaching unprecedentedly low octaves of laughter.

As you've no doubt noticed by now, Fineman's collection of wigs is truly impressive. But she's also not afraid go rogue, like that time she pulled an Anna Delvey and stepped into the lobby of 11 Howard.

In case there was any doubt that Fineman has the range, she's taken on Timothée Chalamet, in all of his shaggy haired glory, too. If fans get their say, it looks like she'll soon be taking over that role from Pete Davidson—along with Marianne Williamson from Kate McKinnon.

Fineman also does an impeccable Meryl Streep, but she might not land that role so easily. The same happens to be true for Bowen Yang, her soon-to-be castmate.

Gay comic Bowen Yang has joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, becoming the show’s first full-time cast member from an Asian background.

It was announced on Thursday (September 12) that Yang would be joining SNL for its upcoming 45th season, which is set to begin on September 28.

Yang, whose parents are from China, is best known as the co-host of gay comedy podcast Las Culturistas, as well as for his viral lip-sync videos to dramatic monologues.

The comic has previously served as a staff writer on the show during its 44th season, co-writing a skit that featured Emma Stone as an actress who is cast in a gay porn film as the cheated-on girlfriend. He also made occasional appearances on the show previously as North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

Yang, 29, was congratulated on Twitter by friends and fans, who pointed out that he was one of only a few out gay men to have joined the SNL cast.

Olympic figure skater Adam Rippon tweeted: “OMG YES YES YES 🙆🏼*♂️👏🏻❤️”

One supporter tweeted: “First Asian cast member and also one of the VERY few openly gay men on the cast. Putting on my Terry Sweeney Nancy Reagan wig and clapping for @bowenyang!”

Another joked: “if you truly care about asian representation, you must venmo all your gay asian male friends $5 to congratulate them on this victory.”

Yang will not be the only out LGBT+ cast member, however, with Kate McKinnon returning to the show.

The two other new cast members announced on Thursday are Shane Gillis and Chloe Fineman.

SNL has previously been called out for its lack of gay male comics, with 1980s staple Terry Sweeney and short-lived 2014 cast member John Milhiser among the only out men to have appeared.

James Adomian, who is known for his viral impersonations of Bernie Sanders, said in 2018: “We are in a golden age of gay male comics, at live shows, around the country and at festivals.

“We are very well-presented at live shows and on the internet. Television? Not so much.

“It’s sad for me to see these guys and go, ‘Oh my god, this is great!’, and then you realize, oh f**k, there’s a brick wall in front of them…. it would be nice if they put a gay man on camera on that show.”

He claimed that execs including SNL’s Lorne Michaels were afraid of putting gay men on TV, adding: “[They’re saying], I’m not homophobic, but I’m afraid that my audience is.”
    https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/09/1...nti-gay-slurs/
Saturday Night Live‘s new cast member Shane Gillis gave the worst ‘apology’ to those accusing him of racism, sexism and homophobia.

Gillis, 31, made the offensive comments in a 2018 episode of his podcast, Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast.

He tried to delete a particularly offensive episode from the internet, but a recording on YouTube resurfaced hours after SNL announced him as their new hire.

The episode features Gillis and his co-host Matt McCusker ranking minorities in “the hierarchy of stand up comedy”. The 20-minute clip is riddled with racist and anti-gay slurs, and the use of the word “gay” as a pejorative.

The pair also sexualise transgender people and express disgust at trans sex workers, who they call “ladyboys.”

They state that white women are the least funny group of people, with gay men being the second un-funniest. They poke fun at Chinese immigrants, who they describe as “f*cking ch*nks” and imitate their accents.

The men then mock the US comic Hasan Minhaj by doing a camp impression of him, call him a “pussy” and a “lesbian”, and discuss whether he’s ever had sex with a man.

Male comedians who talk about mental health are described as “white faggot comics” and “f***ing gayer than Isis”. Gillis claims that to succeed as a comic requires a lot of “d**k-sucking”.

The highly inappropriate comments attracted significant attention on social media as they emerged just as SNL announced its first cast member from an Asian background, Bowen Yang, who is also gay.

The backlash on social media was swift. LGBT+ journalist Alex Berg wrote: “Shane Gillis made racist, homophobic and sexist statements on his podcast as recently as LAST SEPTEMBER. A Philly-based comedy theatre even stopped working with him in the last few years because of his remarks. SNL, why tho?!”

Asian American actress Cindy Chu added: “If you’re a comic & you think calling Chinese ppl ch*nks is funny, you’re a hack AND a racist… For every untalented Shane Gillis there are hundreds of talented Bowen Yangs who have had to fight tooth & nail.”

Vulture noted Gillis has long used racist, homophobic and sexist material in his stand-up performances. “It all raises the question: Did Saturday Night Live vet its new cast members? It’s 2019, so at this point, there’s really no excuse for this kind of slip-up.”

On Thursday, September 12, Gillis responded to the criticism in a statement that falls far short of an actual apology.

He wrote: “I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries. I sometimes miss. If you go through my 10 years of comedy, most of it bad, you’re going to find a lot of bad misses.

“I’m happy to apologise to anyone who’s actually offended by anything I’ve said.

“My intention is never to hurt anyone but I’m trying to be the best comedian I can be and sometimes that requires risks.”

Film producer Malory Yu responded: “You know, Shane Gillis has made me see the light. I get it now!! It was risk-taking COMEDY when a white man hollered ‘ch*nk’ at me through his car window when I walked home from school!!! I’ll be sure to laugh next time, I promise.”
