    Default The Wheel of Time

Well... I'm not sure how many of you people have read this series, but if my information is correct, I finished what there is of the series yesterday. I thought it was good, but what do the rest of you think? Who's your favorite charactors, and why are they your favorite? Have any of you read the starter novel, New Spring? Or any of the other spin-off books, like From the Two Rivers, To the Blight, or The Hunt Begins? Please, share your thoughts.

I've read this series (& re-read it), and love it al'Lan.
I know many people argue that it's gone on for too long, and took in too many characters etc...etc.., but none of that bothers me at all. I like Jordan's style and was never bored at any point in this saga.
I have read all 11 WoT books + New Spring (the other 'spin-off you mention there ... From the Two Rivers, To the Blight, - that's just a re-publication of Book 1 (Eye of the World) in 2 parts.

    Fav characters: -
Perrin (I really liked his Character & the whole Wolf thing).
Lan (Or to giv ehim his full name - & your screenname al'Lan Mandragoran. Great character.
Matt - he just gets better & better.

Having read all 11 I assume you're. like myself, dying to get your hands on Book 12 'A memory of Light'? I assume that it will be the last in the series now, Jordan planned it that way but who knows - with a new hand at the helm. I don't know anything of this Brandon Sanderson guy?

Rest In Peace - Robert Jordan. You were a hell of a writer.

I've read book 1 through.... seven maybe?? It's a decent series, and I liked the baddies most of all.

Yeah, his baddies were pretty well done.
I particularly loved the fades, the Halfmen. Great concept.

Agh... it's hard not to blurt things out. I'm glad others enjoys the series like I do. And yes, MOW, I would kill to get the twelfth book. If Sanderson sticks to Jordan's plan to finish the series with the next book, I will certainly feel bad for him. With how Jordan built up the series, he'll have so many things to tie up that it'll take him years to get the thing written.

I loved this series and will probably reread the whole thing when the last book is released.

What I loved about it was the superb character development Jordan uses - you really care about the characters as they grow and mature and fulfil the roles theyre supposed to play. The language and the names are inventive and original and the background stuff like cultures and histories and politics is thorough and has alot of life in it.

The length of the series does make it complex though, unlike DT where you can drop in at any point and know everything thats going on, WoT has multiple plot threads going on at once, the POV jumps all over the place as the main group split up for whatever reasons. It needs full attention, thats for sure.

Yes. I really do think there's too much to tie up for anyone (Jordan included / Jordan especially? ) to be able to do it in one book. I'd prefer if he takes 2 books if that's what's needed rather than crush it into one just for the sake of it. We'll see how that goes.

    On a side note.
My 10 year old son read Book 1 and loved it. He's now half way through the 2nd book. I was a bit iffy about letting him try it so young? But I think he'll be OK. He'd already read Lord of the Rings.

I don't believe I saw any curse words he wouldn't get laughed at for saying rather than smacked, and I've found that most kids can't really grasp violence in books enough for blood to mean much beyond the color red. No worries on his part dude. And slicing the book into two would be awsome. Just not the wait that that might entail.

Totally. I stopped reading the middle of book eight. I'd have to start at the beginning to get what was going on if I restarted.

I just don't see how he will finish it off in one book. For 11 books he just kept picking up new threads, new plotlines, new characters. Oh, I will read it because I love the series, but I think he might have dug his hole too deep. But we will see.

And I luv Matt. Perrin used to be my fav but he started pissing me off a bit.

Ka-tet, i totally recommend it (as you might guess from above) - great series.
Yes it is large, and yes it does develop many plot-lines and different points-of-view for all the Characters, but personally I'm totally engrossed in it.
    Give it a go!

I started reading it when it first came out, didn't make it past the second book. I found the writing itself to be average at best, many of the story mechanics were unoriginal in the extreme almost to the point of plagiarism. But basically, it bored the shit out of me.

Yup - just goes to prove that all our tastes differ a lot (given we're all DT fans in common).
I was on the opposite side of this fence over on the 'Sword of Truth' Series thread.

I've gotta read this series. I've heard a lot of great things. I think I'm going to make it my summertime project/event. Last summer it was the Harry Potter Series, the one before that, The Sword of Truth series and the one before that, the Dark Tower.

This summer will be the summer of Robert Jordan

I started reading this series back in 2004. At the time, I was told the series was complete. As each new chapter came along, it would take me a little while to remember all of the characters. Cant wait for the final chapter. Hope it is Jordan worthy. And I do really like the series, but it is no Dark Tower...
