I quickly scanned the rules but went ahead and entered anyway. Not sure if it's only for UK residents.

Unfortunately for you Brian, it's only open to UK residents 18 or over. First paragraph of the terms and conditions at the bottom of the page.

Thanks for posting Dan. I wouldn't have known about it otherwise. Put my entry in!

It seems to me that based upon the following email question from Thomas at SK Collector, and the answer he received, The Folio Society did not follow the rules for a giveaway of the 100 (or 110) copies they had with a King signed bookplate. Although I'm happy for our members that were able to snag one, I'm very suspect of The Folio Society and how they "sold" books that were supposed to have been given away.

    Emails:

Tomas Krynsky replied May 11, 16:35

Thank you for the reply Edward. I'll let my readers know.

On various online forums there has been some additional information posted that I wanted to make sure was accurate:

    - There are 10 signed copies for non-customers that can be won by entering the drawing (no purchase necessary)
    - There are 100 signed copies that can be won for customers of the Folio Society / or those first time customers that buy a book between now and June 26th
    - The total number of signed copies available to be won is 110
    - The contest is open to anyone worldwide not just those with addresses in the UK

Does that sound accurate? If so, could you clarify

    - If a person signed up for the non-customer drawing and then later purchased a copy of the book is he entered into both drawings? Or does his purchase move his single entry from the 10 non-customer section to the 100 customer section?
    - Does everyone who buys a book (regardless of title) get entered into the 100 signed copy drawing automatically, or is it for customers that purchase a copy of The Shining specifically?
    - Are these 110 copies in addition to the 2,300? Meaning is the actual print run 2,410 copies?
    - Is there a slipcase that comes with the book?

Thank you again for your time,

    Edward replied May 12, 10:03
    Dear Mr Krynsky

I would be happy to clarify. The first four statements of your email are indeed correct. As to the fifth, one can only enter the draw once, even if you enter and then later purchase a book. I can also confirm that the draw can be entered on the purchase of any book, not solely 'The Shining'. With regards to the print run for the book, please be aware that this is not an exact science, as it were. There were roughly 2,500 copies printed in all. I can also confirm that the book does indeed have a slipcase. This is true for all of our book unless otherwise stated.

I do hope that this clarifies matters.

    Kind regards

I raised the same concern on Kris's FB Group.
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

OK, for my records/notes I keep, it's 110 signed copies. Am I reading that correct?

I don’t see harm done. Especially given all the early books were give always. The publisher had another 80 signed post-its that they affixed to books and sold for a great price. Made another group of happy collectors and brought the price down for others.

They committed fraud if they encouraged people to buy books in order to enter a contest and then reneged on the prizes.

I signed a bookplate "Steve - King of the people in debt buying books", and stuck it in my unsigned edition.

WELL SAID. The whole point of the giveaway was to find 'new' customers too was it not?

All 110 books were supposed to be giveaways. They only gave away 20-30, sat on the others for three years, and then sold them for profit.

That's why in many USA contests, a person can send a SASE to receive a list of the winners. Helps to keep companies honest.
