My 2 cents: I respect Alan's opinion but $1,000 is really on the low side for a fine/fine 2nd state 'Salems Lot... seeing as copies with significant DJ damage, sun fading etc. still go for a couple hundred dollars. My copy (pictured below) is quite nice but far from fine/fine, and I'm pretty sure I could sell it for at least $800. Given the fragility of the DJ and the scarcity of truly fine copies I don't think there is a linear price/condition relationship - IMO $2,000 is not out of the question for a truly great copy.

By the way - that's light reflection on the top edge of the DJ protector, not edge wear

Everyone one here should know by now that I pay half what everyone else pays for their books. I'm Scottish and think you are all mugs for paying the prices you do.

Now, when it comes to selling, the opposite applies.

Hmmmm, if you buy a lettered Misery for 2K, or a numbered Misery for 262.50, then you officially win book-buying, hands down

My two cents.....a truly FINE Salem's DJ are nearly impossible to find...it took me over 15 years to come across one. That said, there might be someone who would pay $2000 for a Fine/Fine copy, but I think it would get snapped up at $1500, about double the pretty decent copies that do sell but that have flaws.

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Stephen-Kin...p2047675.l2557

I offered the seller 1200 (just to get the ball rolling), but he responded with a counteroffer for 2000 and a somewhat patronizing note detailing what percentage from asking my offer was and what percentage his counteroffer was from asking, but before I could really give it any thought or respond, he ended his listing so my offer became void, and then relisted it for the same price. I just ignored the relisting because I figured he was just being an asshole reneging on his counteroffer and probably wouldn't come down to a reasonable price, which I was thinking was in the 1500-1600 dollar range, but then he ended up selling it for a price that I could have justified paying if I hadn't been put off by his first response. C'est la vie, I suppose, but it still irks me to think about

Yes, there was a major shift in my King collecting because of Suntup. I no longer collect NEW King items and my collection in now focussed on King signed items from the 20th Century. Anything released after his accident does not appeal to me anymore. (His signature after the accident is shit anyway.)

This was decided by the way that Suntup made their Misery editions available. Persons who were not serious King collectors of Lettered editions, (20th century collectors), were able to purchase Misery because they had previously purchased a print portfolio!

I will spend my money elsewhere thanks. So if anybody has any lettered Firestarters for sale, I will pay $20,000 for each. I'm looking for as many as I can get. (seriously)

You need to look at the listing in a search of sold items to figure out how much it went for at best offer. I broaden the search to just include one word from the listing I am interested in to get a lot of hits, and thus, a narrower price range. In this case I just did a search for ‘1st,’ changed the results over to sold items organized from highest to lowest price, and then scrolled all the way down to find the salem’s.

Interesting strategy: If a publisher doesn't place a new lettered edition upon a silver platter for the King collecting elite, then change your collecting philosophy altogether so that you don't need or want the edition in question. A lettered Misery is a book for the peasants!

So your sulking cause you didn’t get a Chance at the book is what I read here. That’s a shame cause it looks to be one of the very best there is. I also didn’t have the print portfolio but found a way to get a copy. Not only to support Paul who is one of the best members here but because I’m not going to dwell on how he does business negatively... which is among the classiest and fairest of all the publishers out there. Hopefully you will change your mind when you get a shot at one for half issue price

Collecting preferences change for a variety of reasons! I love the earlier work and earlier signatures too! Just started rereading his works and they hold up even better than I remember. I was focused on the dog in CUJO when I was 18, but loved the husband/wife dynamics after living those things later in life! Salem's Lot scared me to death, but enjoyed the full story last month (so much I did not remember)! Good luck with the direction change!

Even easier; just go to www.watchcount.com and enter the auction number. It will tell you exactly what the best offer price was.
I've been using that site as a reference tool for 5 or 6 years, or at least I was when I was still collecting.

I asked a similar question a few years back and from memory, Bob Jackson said around $2k, given the fragility of the DJ...
Haha, I asked the same question a few months ago, but the posts were purged due to a site glitch or corrupt posts or something on that day. Mr Rabbit Trick had answered that 1000 was the value. So maybe we can split the difference
A few years back, this was at the top of my want list and I can tell you that I would have willingly paid $2K for a fine/perfect copy - if I ever found one. If you are able to find a perfect specimen...grab it. If you get if for less than $2K, then I would say you would have done very well.

Would this be the right thread to ask about proof prices? More shelf cleaning. Like SOD 1 and 2, Riding the Bullet, one of the Dark Man...

As a younger man, I found Pet Sematary absolutely horrifying. Now I'm married with kids, I can't bring myself to read it again.

Same. I started it, but didn't get more than a few chapters in. I've found my perspective has really changed as a father on a lot of his books. In many cases I'm getting a deeper enjoyment in the stories.
