Thanks RT, this auction is actually what prompted me to ask. Seemed to be a “steal” at that price...

Damn! how did I miss that! (although it says £499 not £399) even so, great price.

At the top of the page do not enter anything into the search bar. Just select the category Books, Comics & Magazines. Then on the sidebar under Show only select Sold listings. Sort by highest price. On the bottom of the page you can increase the Items per page to 200. Now using Control F on your keyboard enter the search parameter "Night Shift". Go page to page until you find it. Compare the prices of the items before and after to get a good idea of the actual price. Or you could just look here... https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Books-Com...skc=1200&rt=nc

Back to value on this UK Night Shift. My own guess is that whoever won this copy for £399, in that condition, paid around 1/2, if not 1/3 of its value?

Not to beat a dead horse, but where do you see it sold for 399? All I see is the 499 crossed out.

eBay slots the price/amount of the best offer accepted between sales that are immediately lower and immediately higher than the accepted price. For instance, in this case, the Night Shift sold for less than $399.00, but more than $398.88. Hope that helps.

I would set it's value at approx £1000 ($1350) for a fine copy

I'd say less. More like ~$175-$200. It jumps to $300 if in F/F condition (IMO).

Thanks! I found one at an obscure bookstore earlier today. I would say it is NF but I'm no pro so it could more realistically be VG condition instead (very tight binding but a little DJ wear to edges & page block is a little tanned). I paid $25 for it. Think i got a great deal either way.

Here is a basic guideline some use:

Fine (F or FN): A Fine book approaches the condition of As New, but without being crisp. The book may have been opened and read, but there are no defects to the book, jacket or pages.

Very Good (VG): Describes a book that shows some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either binding or paper. Any defects should be noted by the seller.

Good (G): Describes the average used worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects should be noted by the seller.

Fair: Worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. All defects should be noted.

Poor: Describes a book that is sufficiently worn. Any missing maps or plates should still be noted. This copy may be soiled, scuffed, stained or spotted and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc.

Binding Copy: describes a book in which the pages or leaves are perfect but the binding is very bad, loose, off, or nonexistent.

Reading Copy: A copy usually in poor to fair condition that includes all text presented in a legible fashion. The copy is fine to read but nothing more.

Hope this helps as you embark on the wonderful world of collecting books.
