I agree with you. The price at $10,000 is not "over the top". However when purchasing a lettered Gunslinger the extra inscription and signature in this case would detract from the price.
The book needs to be in line with the other signed limiteds or lettereds.
In this instance it appears that the integrity of the book has been compromised.

The only difference between a Lettered and a Numbered Gunslinger is the stroke of a pen. I find these type of Lettered books less desirable than the totally different productions like Skeleton Crew or The Regulators for instance.

In this case, I think the inscription detracts from this Lettered book only because King should have inscribed an "Author" copy, and not a Lettered.

I feel like the inscription is too generic to be inscribed to a friend of King. Aren't King's inscriptions to family friends usually a bit more elaborate than that? Plus the date of the inscription is October 1984, wasn't the book published in 1982? Or was the lettered edition distributed later than the regular numbered edition?
    Looking for:

    - Fine Viking Eyes of the Dragon proof

Actually, as far as I know these early lettereds were not intended for public distribution at all. I assume that King (or King's office) had all these copies stored somewhere and King could just pick one off the shelf if he wanted to present it as a gift to someone (friend, business partner, you name it). That's what these books were originally intended for and that's why it makes sense that a 1982 book could be given away by King in 1984. The practice of creating lettered editions specifically for sale to the general public didn't start until much later.

A stroke of a pen maybe.
However the recent sale of a "red Lettered" Eyes of the Dragon goes to prove that a little stroke can be a very valuable asset.

Yes, Betts sold #23 a little while ago for $850. He had sold the very same copy a little earlier for only $399. You decide who paid the right price!

    I'm considering a purchase:
What would you say signed, dated ('82) and inscribed book club editions would be worth? Firestarter is VG, Cujo is NF and Dead Zone is VG- to Good+ but the signatures are fantastic. They are all to the same person and there is an article included about where they were signed.
Wanted: Human skin edition of The Book of the Dead. Will accept PC copy.
