No such thing as a First Edition Second Printing. My opinion of course.

A first is a first is a first.

    Gday guys,
Can someone please give me an indication of the value of the Viking reprint of Gunslinger? I would also like to know the value of the third state(?)that came in the Grants box set. There seems to be such a fluctuation in prices on EBay. There a Viking one available saying no price on jacket and no number line. What's that about? Thanks for any help.
    Cheers.

With no dust jacket price, it's probably a Book Club edition. I think $5 is the number.

Interesting, I didn't know the one that came in the Grant box set was a bookclub.

I think you misread the previous post, the OP was talking about a Viking copy with no price on the DJ. Grants 3rd Edition is definitely NOT a BCE!

Sorry for the confusion! What about a proper one with the price? Grants and Viking? So many out there, so many different prices, it blows me away.

from the SKCollector site, Tomas has these prices:

Third printing of 11,000 copies with a re-designed dust jacket was released in 1998, in a 3-box set. It could only be bought new in the set not as a single copy, set value $140-$170 / Individual value for just the Gunslinger = $90-$110

A re-issue of 60,000 copies by Viking Books, revised throughout and with a new forward by SK; released in 2003 coinciding with the release of the fifth volume of the Dark Tower series. Still pretty small by print run standards, it will probably go up in the next few years as it is currently the only revamped gunslinger book. $50-$80

Personally I think they are too low for the Grant set and too high for the Viking, the last 2 sets sold on eBay for $260 and $395 (i'm sure Mr RT will chime in with better numbers) and the Viking can be got for less than $25 (That's what I paid for mine about 12 months ago)

Thanks Stroppy! That being the case, does anyone here have a spare they will part with for somewhere close to those numbers? Just Viking or Grants Gunslinger, not the box set!

The box set sells for $150 - $200. A hundred or so for The Gunslinger and 40-50 for the other two.

The Viking first used to sell for $25 but now is closer to $75 for some reason. The Viking first has a price and numberline so don't buy anything else.

I agree with Brian. I recently purchased Viking first editions of II and III for $25 each which is good price. Gunslinger Viking first F is around $100 on eBay .

When they were first released, the last 3 (Grant) books had not been released yet. They came out soon after. (I think)

You know, Ralph this has bothered me a bit lately. Perhaps I have forgotten since it's been quite a while since I've been "mining" for first/firsts, but how exactly do you discern a first edition, 2nd plus printing? For instance, wasn't "The Gunslinger 1/1 a print run of 10,000 and then DMG printed another 10,000 1/1's after the demand? I believe something like that also occurred with "Night Shift", but was different in that they reportedly pressed BCE into 1/1 printings. Of course, I know the number line denotes editions, but what denotes "printings"? BTW, I tend to agree with you, a first, is a first, is a first.

As I said I forget, but yeah, what's the difference? When the number line loses the "1" you're into the 2nd edition/printing, aside from the anomalies I mentioned above and I suppose a few more over the years. I'm sure we (I) would appreciate the refresher course and to my knowledge, Ralph is just the man to give it!!! LOL

    Spoiler:
He also knows where to get very excellent "Christmas Cookies"!!!! LOL

A 1st trade edition will generally say "First Edition" on the copyright page, but it could have a numberline starting at 2 (for example.) That means it's a second printing of the first edition. So in this case, the numberline indicates the printing. That has always been my understanding.

UK S/L Dr Sleep went very cheap on eBay last week for about $320usd. It was there for weeks and I was tempted to grab it. There's still a couple on UK eBay asking silly money £600plus.
