He's doing something right - so I'm not sure it's "dumb." It's certainly exclusive. (obviously this Gunslinger was priced much too high - but it seems like it was a consignment)

By all accounts, he does have a customer base willing to pay top dollar. Maybe not often, maybe not consistently, but if any seller prices really, really high they only need to hit one home run for a big score, and not a bunch of bloop singles.

His prices are higher than anywhere else. WAY higher. Would you buy from him a book you can buy from David for a significantly lower amount? NO!!! No one would! His customer base must not know about two things.... this site here and Bett's Books. SO mayhap they are the "dumb" ones for paying a ridiculous price. lol

There is a different viewpoint to this, David buys and sells books as a 2nd job, his main employment is completely different. David's prices are probably the best out there, but he only sells what he has bought or consigned to him. His main clientele are mid to high range collectors who are looking for a book to fill a specific hole in their collection. Emmanuel (VFB) on the other hand runs a business and his *main* clientele have very different needs. Not only does Emmanuelle focus on extremely fine copies, he also actively searches for specific books for his bigger customers. He acts as a high end dealer and go between and will buy books 'on spec' specifically for individuals. If those buyers do not want (for any reason) to buy the book, the cost of purchase falls to him, and he has to then try and resell. He also offers a full no quibble guarantee on the books he sells. Also for his 'best' customers I believe those high prices are 'negotiable'

I'm not trying to speak for Emmanuelle or demean David in any way, simply pointing out very different business models. Are Emmanuelles' prices too high? Not if you are the kind of collector who wants the level of service he offers. For the rest of us, quite probably.
"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

Love ya Simon but I have to disagree. David will offer the same if not better level of service that Emmanuelle offers as I am sure you know as you have purchased from him. I have tried to purchase something from Emmanuelle before and his prices were not negotiable at that time anyway.... To each his own but some things make sense and some things do not. Very Fine Books pricing makes no sense to me at all brother...

How so? VFB is an actual store and not a list of books that are possibly for sale. You add a book to your cart, check out and it's yours. You don't need to wait for an email (sometimes for days) only to find out the book is unavailable. David does this as second job and there are blackout days when he's unavailable, not so with VFB. I wouldn't pay those prices but somebody obviously is.

I have never had that issue with David. Nothing but top notch expert service. I guess if you were looking for a specific book in a specific number you might pay the price.. but it is nice to have a "cart" to buy from. I am sure that David will have that eventually.

If I remember correctly, Ari was working on a store for Betts. Not sure what happened.

I had a bigcartel e-store for my old band. It took five minutes to set up. They take a small percentage but something like an "add to cart" button and "stock availability" clearly displayed would probably increase impulse purchases at Betts.

I have bought from both guys and will again.
I always thought Emmanuelle's prices werre too high and when David took over from Stu his prices were too low. I think that is changing. Both guys are super, returned phone calls and each had a little wiggle room. Wish David had new website and an assistant.

Great dialogue and I didn't recognize my "dumb" comment would generate so much passion.

Bottom line is that I'm not gonna' pay the following prices:

    - $850 for a S/L Doctor Sleep
    - $1,250 for a S/L CUJO
    - $1,895 for a S/L Firestarter

Obviously, somebody will. To each their own….

Plus knowing its yours is nice. Last winter I saw a LE of Firestarter & Christine. I wrote David as soon as I saw them and he replied "Sorry sold". A month later I got them from Kris. These are in the top 10 of my favorite SK books. Thanks again Kris!

That be great news! David needs a new site I also think once this house stuff is done and he is back to his regular routine... postings/updates/returned emails and what not will get back on track. I bear with him... cause HE IS WORTH IT
Plus knowing its yours is nice. Last winter I saw a LE of Firestarter & Christine. I wrote David as soon as I saw them and he replied "Sorry sold". A month later I got them from Kris. These are in the top 10 of my favorite SK books. Thanks again Kris!

    I agree with Simon.

They have different business models and cater to a largely different clientèle.

    I'm more of a Bett's person.

I find VFB to be too pricey. However there are some who have the money and desire the finest. VFB might be the better option for them.
