And just like that our 14 time period winners have all been determined. Our first polls opened on March 14, 2016 and closed today, on January 1, 2017. That's a span of 294 days or 9 months and 19 days. Here are the winners, ranked from 1 to 14 according to their average vote percentages acquired through the tournament:
    1. Simon and Garfunkel - The Sound of Silence (1964) 75.82%
    2. Jerry Lee Lewis - Great Balls of Fire (1957) 75.60%
    3. Eagles - Hotel California (1976) 74.54%
    4. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under the Bridge (1991) 71.84%
    5. Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight (1981) 71.66%
    6. Vaughn Monroe - Riders in the Sky (A Cowboy Legend) (1949) 71.21%
    7. Tom Petty - Free Fallin' (1989) 69.53%
    8. The Mamas and the Papas - California Dreamin' (1966) 66.28%
    9. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven (1971) 65.45%
    10. Nat King Cole - Unforgettable (1952) 64.29%
    11. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani California (2006) 63.84%
    12. Johnny Cash - Hurt (2002) 62.81%
    13. Adele - Set Fire to the Rain (2011) 61.81%
    14. Seal - Kiss From a Rose (1995) 61.56%

As discussed earlier, tomorrow we begin the ultimate showdown, the Tournament Finals. The bracket system being used was linked in my previous post. There will be 13 match-ups in all, one and done, within 5 rounds (Round 1, Round 2, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, Finals).

The tracks are seeded as follows: the top four tracks are promoted to the Quarterfinals. The next six tracks are promoted to Round 2. The bottom four will go through a Round 1 for the remaining two spots of Round 2. Polls will go up each Monday of January and run for seven days, as usual.

The first two matchups of the Tournament Finals are now up here in the main sub-forum (these are no longer tied to a specific era). Interestingly, and perhaps somewhat understandably, the four lowest ranked winners are from the last four time periods (1995-1999, 2000-2004, 2005-2009, and 2010-2014). And as the most recent tracks need this first Round 1 to prove their worth, so to say.

Another note of trivia: the only two winners to go through all eight rounds (preliminary Rounds 1-3, Playoffs Rounds 1-2, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals) are "Seal - Kiss From a Rose" and "Adele - Set Fire to the Rain" (#13 and #14). But because the 1940s and the early 1950s did not have a preliminary Round 3, "Vaughn Monroe - Riders in the Sky (A Cowboy Legend)" also went through all seven possible rounds.

We have now entered the Quarterfinals stage of the Tournament Finals. Only eight tracks remain...

Getting close to the end. Only four remain standing as the two Semifinals polls are up. This is it, for the right to go to the Finals and become our greatest piece of music!

I'm not sure how the hell Jerry Lee Lewis snuck in but the other 3 are great songs. Certainly not the 4 I expected to make it to the finals.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

Certainly not. To begin with, The House of the Rising Sun should have been there. Let alone that it should have won in the end.

Yeah, there were some surprises in the finals. I wouldn't consider a bunch of those the best of their era by any means. Here's hoping Hotel California wins it all

Another big mistake on my part was not nominating "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong when I had the chance.

Quite a few great tracks had to be left off due to space or were simply forgotten by us... Nothing we can do about that, I don't think it's possible to make a 100% objective all-encompassing list.

There are three pretty sad eliminations.
All that's left of what we were is what we have become.

Yes...I failed to nominate Humble Pie's 30 Days in the Hole

(Coincidentally...the name of a porn I once saw!)
