I really liked it! It sort of pre-dates the grandiose epics that abound in fantasy these days, and you can see how it directly influenced a lot of the more modern works in the genre (specifically Martin's As Song of Fire and Ice Series). At the same time it is evident where it's roots come from, Tolkien, yet without in anyway aping his stories. There is similar root influence, mainly ancient mythology, more specifically Gaelic and Celtic in Williams work (with a dash of Norse for good measure), where as, arguably, Tolkien is the opposite (more Norse than ancient Britain). I also like that Williams incorporates song and poetry into his style, admittedly not as much as Tolkien or William Morris, but it is there and I wish it was an element that was more prevalent in modern fantasy. With that said the story is a slow burn, again similar to Tolkien's style in The Lord of the Rings, but it is an enjoyable journey. Not overly complex, but highly enjoyable. I liked the characters too, well rounded and flawed, they do progress throughout the novels, but not in unbelievable way.

Overall it just has a very mystical yet comfortable feeling. It scratched an itch I didn't know I had. This isn't modern edgy fantasy, nor is it dated, it is timeless.
