I've always been asking for a best movie quote tournament. I always thought a best movie twist tournament would be cool, but it wouldn't work because people wouldn't want to get spoiled.

So with Ant-Man and the Wasp coming out next weekend, that will make it an even 20 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and there was talk of having a small tournament to rank and pick the best MCU movie. So we should be able to get to it a few weeks after the movie's been out. I believe feev volunteered to host it and we haven't had a movie tournament in a while.

I haven't even seen the new avengers movie yet.

We typically wait until it comes out on DVD.
Hearts are tough, she said, most times hearts don't break, and I'm sure that's right . . . but what about then? What about who we were then? What about hearts in Atlantis?

Because it would be a minimum of $30 to take my family to the theater. And that's going to the early show with no snacks. Going to a later show is probably closer to $60+.

It's so much cheaper to just buy the blu-ray for $20 and watch it in the comfort of my own home with my own snacks.

The last movie we saw in theaters was Spiderman Homecoming and that's because we were on vacation, didn't really have anything planned for the day and our hotel was right next to a theater.

We still have yet to come to a consensus on a next tournament. I know it's been mentioned before, but I'm wondering if we shouldn't just go ahead and do a tournament of the best films of the current decade (2010-2019). Since we are in the final year of the decade, it seems kind of like a no-brainer to me. By the time we collect all the entries for each year, we will probably have a pretty good cross section of films for 2019. Just a thought.

You know I'd be super down with that! Hopefully this gets enough of the regulars interested that we may launch before too long. We haven't had a tournament in a while! As we go through 2019 though, I'm sure a lot of great movies will come out toward the end of the year so my suggestion would be to do several tournaments with breaks between them. We can do the 1990s, the 2000s and that could get us to the end of 2019 so we can do the 2010s in early 2020. Looking at our last few tournaments (Best Scene, Best Comedy), it varies how long the nominations process took but if we stick to the 200 titles per that we've had, the average seems to be four months or so. So we can start the 1990s right now, finish up around May, take a two month break, then start the 2000s in August and end in December. That gets us to the end of 2019. And in February 2020, once we've had a chance to catch all the major December releases, we can finally do the 2010s.

I don't know if anything like this has been done or not, but I was thinking of a Stephen King 1/1 hardcover covers tournament. The way I saw it we could divide the tournament as follows: stage 1 US vs UK covers. So for any book that has substantially different covers we could pick the version that is the best (i.e. Danse Macbre is basically the same, so no need to do it). Then stage 2 would be the winners of stage 1, plus any book that is the same for both, or only has a US version (Cycle of the Werewolf for example). I think this could be a quick tournament, since there would be no need for a nomination phase. I was thinking we could use this page as the entries: http://www.thedarktower.org/?page=imagelimit2

I'm definetly interested to see if people prefer the US or UK versions.

I'd be down for that. I like the timeline breakdown. The 90's were pretty fertile for film and included quite a variety of films. I envision a fairly involved nominating process.

And I'd be happy to shepherd it. I think our movie tournaments have always been pretty popular and fun, and also unpredictable. For instance, I don't think Shawshank would win as the best film of the 1990s. Maybe I'm wrong. The goal, of course, would be to do every decade eventually, and then do a round-robin thing between each winner for the ultimate best of all time winner. If there are no objections, then I can start up the official tournament thread on Monday or something.

Yeah of course. I think over the years we've developed a good and fair system. Basically, 200 seconded titles, you can nominate as many as you want given five nominations in-between, and you can second anytime. I think that's how we did it.

I had a thought I'd like to share with the class regarding these tournaments, but first I'd just like to show my appreciation and give thanks to TPTB that work so hard behind the scenes making these things as totally awesome as they are!!! Thank you guys and I guess thanks to all who participate as well.

I got to thinking that the tournaments are fun, but maybe a little repetitive. Seems like a lot of the same films keep showing up at the end, and for good reason they're great films. We also tend to go with standard criteria for the voting and I thought that maybe a few tournaments with a little more innovative criteria might be fun. Whether they appear as a stand alone major tournament or perhaps "mini" tournaments in between decades. For example we could have a tournament for..................................

    • Film Trilogy's
    • Inclusive ones for major franchises (i.e. James Bond, Fast & Furious, Mad Max etc)
    • Single actor multiple genre films (DeNiro/Crime, McConnaughy/Rom-Com, etc)
    • Save the world Sci-Fi (Armaggedon, Deep Impact, etc)
    • Multiple title by author ( Clancy/King?Rowling)
    • Star Trek Then vs Now

That's just afew ideas off the top of my head. I'mm sure you folks could expound upon them with much more knowledge and vigor. Again, not that the current tournaments aren't top notch, they are. I'm also not suggesting to terminate them just perhaps augment them if possible. Of course I realize this would be in large part up to TPTB as far as taking the time and energy to pull them off. I just thought I'd throw the seed out there and see if it took any root with the membership. Could be a fun and interesting addition or diversion to the current or future tournaments.
