I pulled mine out just to check to make sure mine wasn't too bad, which it isn't but after looking it over and then flipping through the pages I noticed this. Does anyone else have blue fingers after holding theirs? Probably should have gloves on but they'd probably be blue, too.

Which then transfers to the pages:

I was initially surprised there was such a high % of issues in the poll.

Then I realized people are far more likely to comment with problems than if everything is perfect. Kind of like if you have bad food at a restaurant - you complain.

The blue fingers post has me concerned with some long term durability issues.

The issue with that view is the only complaints we will see are people who are on here. And people who actually open the books.

And I disagree with the food analogy - everyone who receives limiteds on here usually posts awesome comments on how much they like it when they receive it.

I would like to see some nice pictures of what it's supposed to look like from those who have reported no issues at all.

Was the deluxe editions also published oversees? Were they done by a reliable printer that has done books for them before? Just curious as I know the gift was printed in China and therefore mass produced with a glossy material which would be less resistant to these "manufacturing" problems. I have had to get refunds twice from VistaPrint. I think this is going to be an ongoing issue as book publishers look to minimize their costs. No?

Default rubbing to s/l The Shining

Yes, after reading the comments, I do have (vertical) rubbing to the front and rear covers. And also the (blue like?) staining to both sides of the tray case. I had the book (with the remarque) up for sale on ebay and have ended the auction. There was alot of interest in the book and I'm stuck with the ebay fees. I have emailed Bill Schaeffer but have not received a response, yet. I hope at the very least I can get a refund. At best I hope to receive a PC copy and a refund for the remarque which I'm sure would not be included. Thanks for letting me vent.

I general, people are more likely to complain than praise-certainly when it comes to food and hospitality.
This is a distinctly different issue. It appears that (and SubPress has admitted such) that there was a manufacturing/production issue as well as a post production issue with ink transference to the traycase.
It's a small sample size, but if >80% of the books are flawed it is a shame in all regards-essentially few if any will "love the book".

I took a soft microfiber towel and lightly buffed the boards of my copy and this is what came off of it. More would probably come off on skin because of the moisture/oils but I figured this would help minimize the spread of the blue.

It's uncommon. Boards of hand marbled paper are uncommon too. I think there were a combination of factors that caused this. The type of ink, the type of adhesive, the curing time, off-gassing while confined in a traycase, no dustjacket, etc.. Some books are far worse than others. Most of the damage wasn't apparent prior to shipping. No publisher wants this to happen. It really sucks.

I am not at all familiar with hand marbled paper, but I would think the paper could be sealed befor the binding process. I a m not saying this as a complaint or to be an ass but any artist who uses pencils or charcoal can tell you there are archival sprays that seal the image to the paper and prevent smudging, transfer. I wonder if they investigation into what happened might show a step was missed somewhere in the process? I hope this doesn't prevent Sub. Press from using marbled boards, or other interesting designs for their books. They tried to make a numbered edition that I feel was as nice as a lot of lettered editions, and deserve props for this!

"A real limited edition, far from being an expensive autograph stapled to a novel, is a treasure. And like all treasures do, it transforms the responsible owner into a caretaker, and being a caretaker of something as fragile and easily destroyed as ideas and images is not a bad thing but a good one...and so is the re-evaluation of what books are and what they do that necessarily follows." - Stephen King

I think sky (though correct me if I'm wrong) had an issue with a previous statement made by Bill. He stated that they were aware this issue could happen (though not to this extent) but didn't inform the customers who had ordered.

I have to slightly agree with him in that, we should have been made aware of the issue. Now, that being said the book is on my shelf and matches my DR. SLEEP. customer service has always been great but I am probably in the minority that thinks the solution isn't really right.

I doubt it's the papers fault. Hand marbled paper has been around for hundreds of years. They now certainly have sealers, fixers, etc.. Bill says it was the binding process. I'm sure he would like to know exactly what failed in that process. The damage seems to be worse where greater amounts of adhesive would be present. I think the marbled boards are beautiful. It's a real shame that so many are damaged.

    Hey john,

Make sure you turn it in the light a bit. Some of the rubbing doesn't immediately show as those white stripes but it will show at certain angles in the light. I have both kinds on mine.

I just double checked it and I really can't see anything on the book, just the traycase shows a bluish streak.
