Default Top Ten Films of 1990-1999

Like the top 2000s films thread, I'd like to hopefully create another list for the 1990s decade as well. Since there are so many great movies each year, not to mention each decade, I've developed a system in that first thread that seems to work, for me anyway. Please feel free to post your ruminations and systems and lists. Let's do this for all the decades!

I just look through thousands of movies on IMDB going through year to year and I make a list and then I just go through process of elimination. Watching Shawshank Redemption now and it's definitely on my top 10 for this decade. I actually caught most of Titanic last week and while it won't be on my list this far removed from my last viewing it's still a very solid film. I think I can naturally assume that Dark City will be making my list but it is hard to say. Much like my 2000's list it could be a bit before mine is done.

    In roughly chronological order:

    Goodfellas (1990)
    Jacob's Ladder (1990)
    Hard-Boiled (1992)
The Bride with White Hair (1993)
    The Mystery of Rampo (1994)
    Forrest Gump (1994)
    Pulp Fiction (1994)
Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996)
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
    The Sixth Sense (1999)

The last one cut (" #11 ") was Boogie Nights (1997).

Oh, and since I am a huge fan of Korean cinema, I would be remiss if I didn't add my top Korean film from the '90s: The Harmonium in My Memory (1998). That's not to say it's the best Korean film of the decade or anything; only that most of the Korean movies I've seen are post-1999. But it is a sweet little movie, with arguably the best actress working today (Do-yeon Jeon) in an early role.

Yeah. A few strong films, like Dances With Wolves, for instance.

Overall the 90's are weak. I mean there a lot of very good entertainment films but i really wasn't until the last few years we got some very good films. 94/97-99 were the best years of the decade. 97/99 being the best.

So I was able to whittle each year down to its Top 3. This actually proved to be quite difficult for some years, such as 1994 and 1995. So:

    1. Dances with Wolves (1990)
    2. Misery (1990)
    3. Ghost (1990)

    1. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
    2. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
    3. Night on Earth (1991)

    1. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
    2. The Lover (1992)
    3. Aladdin (1992)

    1. Schindler's List (1993)
    2. Jurassic Park (1993)
    3. Three Colors: Blue (1993)

    1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
    2. Pulp Fiction (1994)
    3. Natural Born Killers (1994)

    1. The Usual Suspects (1995)
    2. Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
    3. Seven (1995)

    1. Primal Fear (1996)
    2. Fargo (1996)
    3. Kolya (1996)

    1. Titanic (1997)
    2. Good Will Hunting (1997)
    3. Contact (1997)

    1. American History X (1998)
    2. Saving Private Ryan (1998)
    3. Dark City (1998)

    1. Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
    2. American Beauty (1999)
    3. Fight Club (1999)

I'll come back a bit later with the 1 through 30 ranking.

There's actually a lot there that I considered before narrowing down my list. Dark City was hard to leave off, as was Shawshank, Jurassic Park, T2, and Titanic. On the other hand, I did not care for Fight Club or American Beauty much at all.

Interesting that Goodfellas did not even make your top three for 1990, as I believe it is a strong contender for best film of the decade.

Sadly, I watched Goodfellas only once and while I enjoyed it, I may need to rewatch it (I have the DVD), because it didn't jump out at me or sear itself into my memory.

Goodfellas is incredibly overrated. It's not even in Scorcese's ten best let alone top ten of the decade. Casino > Goodfellas

I didn't even refer to any culture, so whoever left this comment clearly does not know what they're talking about lol. I am not sure how liking Casino over Goodfellas makes me a poser. I mean, that doesn't even make sense.

Don't worry about it. Paying attention to reputation is the real definition of pretentious.

Well, I'm not in any position to change that. All I can do is point out that "People who matter don't mind, and people who mind don't matter." Anonymous name-calling = stunted personality.

Personally, I think you have a point about Scorsese having done better, but I don't agree about every one of the films you listed topping it.
Certainly not Casino. Have you seen Mafia! (Jim Abrahams, 1998 ) ...?

    I have so many questions:

    What is a reputation?
    Where do I find them?
    Is it something anonymous?
Can you get in trouble if you get enough of them?

I've been part of this site since 2007 and I've never heard of it. Whomever sent that should be ashamed. Have some balls and post it in the thread. I disagree with you on the Goodfellas subject, but I'm not going to start name calling and send reputations.

Definitely, and it was very hard leaving Casino off my top-three of 1995 list.

I haven't watched Casino in a very long time. I made a sort of prelimary list (narrowed it down to about 20 films) but there a lot of films I have on hand that I haven't seen from the decade so over the next few weeks I'll dedicate my movie watching, as I've watched few movies lately, strictly to 90's movies. Going to check to see what I have on hand...I've got:

Dances With Wolves (haven't seen in years)
    Ed Wood (never seen)
    Carlito's Way (never seen)
    Miller's Crossing (never seen)
    Secrets and Lies (never seen)
    Sling Blade (never seen)

Also want to watch Quiz Show, Krantz and Gouldenstein are Dead and some others as well.

No it's not in Scorseses ten best? I'm glad you agree.

I can understand saying that Goodfellas isn't Scorsese's best film, but not even in his top 10? I don't know about that. I'd love to see your list of Marty's top 10 best films.

I'm sure you will have The Aviator ahead of it. I strongly disagree with that. The Aviator is one of the least favorite Scorsese films I've ever seen.
