I started Charlaine Harris's latest Sookie Stackhouse book, Deadlocked, but it was seriously so bad I stopped about 6 pages in. Yep, 6 pages - it was just awful. These books used to be an enjoyable guilty pleasure but she's managed to leech all the joy out of them by not finishing the series while it was good and flooging the dead horse that remains for money.

What did you think of Brian Hodge? I recently discovered him (Picking the Bones) and find his stories and his command of English superb.

It's better than most of Saul's work, but worse than some (preciously rare, like Nathaniel). It would have been difficult for it to compete with Ira Levin's novel, so Saul just emphasized the similarities; sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I was also annoyed that Ryan behaved as if he was 6 instead of 10 (except in the very last chapters). But all in all, very enjoyable, especially (as it is often the case with Saul) the first quarte or so.

Fair enough. I think you summed it up a while back. His books are pretty good, but not outstanding. He is a good storyteller, in my opinion.

I adore him. Even though he is not a very good writer. It's my comfort reading.
