Funny, it was hard for me to cut my list to fifty. I still think of ones that should have been in there.

Well, I had to make two lists: one of movies made originally in English, and the other for what you would call "foreign" movies. I didn't include any Russian movies at all, although they are my very favorite, and I could easily have made a top 100 - but I understand that nobody has no access to them anyway, so it would be no use.

List One is in chronological order (my unquestionable top three would be It's a Wonderful Life, 12 Angry Men (the original), and Casablanca). Of course it is subject to change; that's what things are like as of today:

    1. San Francisco (1936, Woody Van Dyke)
    2. One Hundred Men and a Girl (1937, Henry Koster)
    3. Mr.Smith Goes to Washington (1939, Frank Capra)
    4. Rebecca (1940, Alfred Hitchcock)
    5. Citizen Kane (1941, Orson Welles)
    6. Casablanca (1942, Michael Curtiz)
    7. Arsenic and Old Lace (1944, Frank Capra)
    8. Spellbound (1945, Alfred Hitchcock)
    9. It's a Wonderful Life (1946, Frank Capra)
    10. Harvey (1950, Henry Koster)
    11. Singin’ in the Rain (1952, Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly)
    12. Roman Holiday (1953, William Wyler)
    13. Rear Window (1954, Alfred Hitchcock)
    14. The Trouble With Harry (1955, Alfred Hitchcock)
    15. Twelve Angry Men (1957, Sidney Lumet)
    16. The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957, David Lean)
    17. Some Like It Hot (1959, Billy Wilder)
    18. West-Side Story (1961, Jerome Robbins & Robert Wise)
    19. To Kill a Mockinbird (1962, Robert Mulligan)
    20. Lawrence of Arabia (1962, David Lean)
    21. The Servant (1963, Joseph Losey)
    22. Mary Poppins (1964, Robert Stevenson)
    23. My Fair Lady (1964, George Cukor)
    24. Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 hours 11 minutes (1965, Ken Annakin)
    25. The Sound of Music (1965, Robert Wise)
    26. Who is Afraid of Virginia Wolf (1966, Mike Nichols)
    27. The Lion in Winter (1968, Anthony Harvey)
    28. Oliver! (1968, Carol Reed)

Thank you so much for posting your list Jean. You've got some great films on there. I'm definitely going to go check out some of the ones you've bolded that I haven't seen yet.

The Discreet Charm is a classic, and I am sure you will love it; Notre Histoire is very weird, and I am not so sure... but it is worth a try anyway, there's a VERY big chance you might love it, too.

You've got some great movies there Melike.

I think I might need to go back and redo my list sometime, there have been some great films I've seen this past year.

Brownings Childe has some great ones also.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago. - Edgar Allan Poe

Bunch together a group of people deliberately chosen for strong religious feelings, and you have a practical guarantee of dark morbidities expressed in crime, perversion, and insanity. - H.P. Lovecraft

Your list and Jean's list are my favorite, too.
And I have made a little change on my list.

Note : I decided to cut the number in half for two reasons

    1. 25 is a less daunting number and will perhaps encourage members to post their lists

    2. I wanted people to really think about their list and force them to include their absolute BEST

I'm also inviting those that have already posted their lists to post one again without looking at the their previous post! When done, go back and compare the two lists, see how your tastes have varied/changed over the years. There are lots of new members here, so I expect to see more lists

Here is my revised list , in alphabetical order:

    12 Angry Men
    Brazil
    Casablanca
    Chinatown
    Clockwork Orange
    Dark Knight
    Godfather
    Godfather II
    Goodfellas
    It's A Wonderful Life
    No Country For Old Men
Once Upon A Time In The West
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
    Predator
    Pulp Fiction
    Schindler's List
    Taxi Driver
    Terminator 2
    The Empire Strikes Back
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
    The Shawshank Redemption
    There Will Be Blood
    Vertigo
    Watchmen
    Yojimbo

I'll post one soon, but this is going to be hard to narrow it down

Feev, you've got an interesting mix of films there. But I thought for sure you were going to add on It's a Wonderful Life.
