I am reading SoS. I love how one chapter is about Sansa getting her panties in a twist over getting a new gown from Cersei and the next is about poor Arya traveling with Lem and Tom. Talk about misplaced priorities.

I'm almost done with GOT and have to say that I hate King Robert.

He is an idiot! How is it that he has managed to stay in power so long when it seems he is so stupid as to what is going on around him. Not only that, but he keeps talking about how cruel the old king was, when he isn't so great himself, conspiring to kill a 13 year old girl and her unborn baby is pretty cowardly, if they ever become a threat he should be man enough to face them on the battlefield and not while the baby is still in its mother's womb.
He is also a serial womanizer. I don't like infidelity.
I want Dany to get an army and take the throne back. She is such an interesting character. I also subscribe the the theory previously mentioned that Jon Snow is really Ned's sister's child. It's the only thing that makes complete sense, the way he dreams about her begging him, but for what??? And of course he would have to keep it quiet. She was probably weak and got sick after childbirth. Ironically, I'm not completely sure she like King Robert as much as he loved her. She was upset about him fathering a bastard, as mentioned, and maybe fell in love with rhaegar-- so far there is no indication of how he was except that King Robert says he raped Lyanna. I think Ned planted the story about the woman who was the mother, after all, why would a mother give up their child?
My favorite character is the hound, and I secretly hope that through the series Sansa ends up falling for him and they get together... can anyone confirm my suspicion? This would redeem sansa for being an uptight, snooty prick.
I love tyrion, and was sad about the story of his 'wife'. I hate his father.
Oddly, the only thing that makes me hate the queen or Jamie is what happened to Bran. Not thrilled about the Ned ambush, but I can't bring myself to hate him.

GOT is influenced heavily by The War of the Roses in England. King Robert is very much like the kings of that time in our world. I think he is especially influenced by people like Henry VI. I don't think you are really supposed to like him. Pity him sometimes, perhaps, be perplexed by his changes, but not really like him.

But I assume the series is spread through several years??? I am still on the first one but it would make sense that it does. Dany is like 13 and she got married and pregnant, I don't think much of the age factor when it comes to this time period. I'm not sure of the age of Sandor.

Maybe I shouldn't have started to read this series. I just saw that the last two books are published about 5 years apart each... which means I may not know the end of this series until I'm 40. Bad investment.

Its so good though right up until the very end. My husband is imminently about to finish book 2 and cant wait to get to book 3.

So the issues people had with book 4 was that it wasnt about the main characters so much? I really liked book 4 and really this series is all encompassing and its pertinent info. Plus a major character is finally reaping what they've sewn. Its also very interesting to hear about

My primary quarrel with book 4 is that it's essentially a rehash of the events of book 3, albeit through the eyes of secondary - and much less interesting - characters. Well, in some cases anyway. I love the Aeron Damphair stuff.
