Welcome to TDT.org, Greenelk! Please make yourself at home and jump right into the discussions.

Hopefully Ric will come along and update the first post with your book info.

While we're on the subject, does anyone else have any updates? There were a lot of unopened copies when last we talked a couple months ago.

With all we have learned in the past, you folks with un-opened copies should really break down and open them. Unsigned, un-numbered etc, etc Is it really worth it at this point? I mean I used to feel the same way, but with some of the horror stories it just seems silly at this juncture. JMHO

The first page has been updated with the latest editions. I have highlighted all sales that I can find. It appears Betts no longer has any editions for sale. Hopefully, 2013 will produce some new numbers. If anyone have or know of some of the missing numbers, please post or PM, so we can keep site updated... Later RIC #520

Hey RIC, what's the current count? How many of the 200 have you identified currently?

I gotta say you have a very impressive list there!!! Gotta be less than 50 and more like 25-30 that are still missing, no?

Merlin.. I believe to have 132 books reported, which remain 68 that are not found yet. I know of a few that are not reported due to the owner prefer them not included. It is an interesting project and one that can never be completed. I wish when owners trade or sell, they would let me know so I can keep the list current. I doubt that is happening very much….

At this point, where there is no chance of getting a replacement from the publisher, perhaps keeping them sealed is the best option. That way you can sell it in the future as a signed, numbered copy in all good faith. Should the buyer decide to open it and find it is not signed, they would have invalidated their right to return it for a refund as it's no longer in the condition in which it was sold.

If you advertise it as "Signed", and it turns out not to be, you have made a falsr representation, and will be liable.

Very impressive list I congratulate all for the hard work that had to go into this. To ask a question is there a site that is dedicated to keeping track of books like this. If not there really should be I find it interesting the travels, and approximate locations. Reminds me a little of "Where's George?". Instead of stamping the book with a code maybe a printable registration card can be included with the book. Anyway again truly impressive work, and fascinating.

The seller doesn't have to claim the book is signed, he just has to refer to the publisher's label that states it is signed. It's up to the buyer to draw his own conclusions on the likelihood of that being accurate.

I bought the trade edition of Knowing Darkness and it came without a slipcase. The seller said the listing didn't mention it came with a slipcase even though that's how it was issued. What a shitbag. Should I have asked if it came with pictures and words too?

If something is issued as a signed edition, it should be signed or it's getting sent back. It's not up to the buyer to ask if the book is really signed if the book was issued as a signed edition. It's up to the seller to list defects etc. If you bought a brand new car, would you ask if it came with brakes?

Ah, but books aren't held to those standards are they? If I returned every book that had a flaw or wasn't "as advertised", I would have very few left.

The first basic requirement of a book is that it is readable. However, I would say 95% of the books I've read have typos to one extent or another. Maybe I should send them back and request a copy without typos? Yeah, right!

And what about publisher's claims of a novel being "a thrilling roller-coaster ride", etc. only for it to turn out to be a damp squib? Refund, please?

Anyway, back to the matter in hand. If the book is new and sealed, then the seller is unaware of any internal flaws it may have, so cannot be said to be misrepresenting them.

JasonUK: I think you'll learn that the members here hold each other to a higher standard than that. No one would expect any seller here to stick to your argument if that situation ever eventuated, and advocating such a position won't do much to establish a good reputation here. IMO.
