Default Little Sisters VS The Wind

I'm curious which is the prefered DT book in our midst.

For me, it's Little Sisters without a second thought. It's about Roland and that's just one of the advantages it has over The Wind.

Off-topic, sorry, but Little Sisters vs. the Wind sounds like an interesting title for a completely different book.

You know those porn versions of superhero movies? I'm sure there could be one with 'Little Sisters', 'Hole' and 'Through'

For me, The Wind Through The Keyhole is by far the better story. More interesting characters (both new and old), more history, more horror, more of everything really.

It really grabbed my attention in a way Little Sisters didn't.

I have to agree here. LSOE is a short story and while it does involve "Roland" it is a sort of "bug on the windshield" IMHO. I did enjoy the story very much, but I feel WTTKH gave us so much more insight than LSOE which was more or less an isolated, yet critical, situation. That's just me though, and what the heck do I know?

I liked Wind quite a bit, but for some reason like Little Sisters of Eluria better. I did enjoy the ending of Wind quite a bit though with the mother's letter. Wind was a bit more predictible. Whereas with Sisters I didn't really know exactly where that story was heading.

Yeah, as the story goes, I like TWTTKH better for the info, but as a read, I agree LSOE was a little bit better.

For the record, I enjoyed both!!!

One is a novel and one is short story, so for me, it isn't a fair comparison. I liked them both differently.

now bears are very apprehensive of The Wind. They didn't like LSoE at all, except for the very beginning (the dog and all)

I like The Sisters more than The Wind for a whole list of reasons. Most importantly, it feels like an old school King book. The language of the book (to me at least) felt like The Drawing and The Waste Lands. Very concise, focused and unrellenting. Another major point is that it's about Roland, and we get to see him before he's the calloused killer he is in The Gunslinger. The Wind is a well-written, satisfying book in itself but ranks last as a DT book. It's almost like King felt melancholy and was missing Mid-world and then decided to write a story set in it as opposed to having a good idea already set in Mid-world.

You might like The Wind more, you never know.

Don't rub it in, I am already totally heartbroken. When I first heard that The Wind was set between volumes 4 and 5, I so hoped it would be about Roland and the ka-tet!

Have you read it yet Jean?

    The Skin Man story
    Spoiler:
is focussed primarily on young Roland.
Albeit it's not the longest tale of the three. (Unlike the dolls from your homeland, these stories get bigger as you go in.. heh.) I thought them both good stories.

As for the rest of the Ka-tet,
    Spoiler:
they feature, if mainly as an audience to Roland's tale(s) like us. We do get to hang out with them for a while at the start.

As for which I preferred, i'm with Patrick. Too very different tales, it's difficult to compare. I like them each differently.

Jean, if you read it, just go with the concept that WDIL mentioned: It's an unrelated story set in Mid-World. Period. Then any mention of Roland and/or the ka-tet is bonus.

I like both, but TWTTK is a new DT book, while LOE is just a short story. It’s like comparing an appetizer to a full meal, it just doesn’t compare.

I thought the "Skin Man" was really good:

    Spoiler:
Outside of the hunt for the killer (Which was a pretty scary and intense story), I really liked the sections concerning Roland nursing Cort, and the continuation of the death of Gabriell plotline.
It was also great to finally get to know Jaime, the only member of Roland’s original Ka-Tet we had never gotten to read about before.

Wow, I am really surprised to see that Wind is the winner one. I liked it a lot but Little sisters swept me off my feet however I can't stand vampire stories. I read it a long time ago and still its ending is really vivid in my mind as if I had read it yesterday.

    Roland would have understood.

    I agree.
    Spoiler:
I thought it a shame that he didn't feature more, but the bit we got was good.

    Oh, and interesting that
    Spoiler:
    his birthmark
turned out to be different than I imagined.

Well oky, not that interesting. I guess I'm easily impressed.

Not sure why I feel compelled to dig up old threads, but I'm curious about if you got around to reading this? For me, the best part of this book, is I'm now half way through Song of Susannah again :-)

I have read TWTTKH, and posted in its section; I think I'll follow your example and reread the two books that - chronologically - follow. (Not the third, though). Wolves is the very top of everything one might wish for, and SoS is sooooo freaking good too!

P.S. and Chantarelle? digging up old threads is awesome!! there are thoughts there - and if they are old thoughts, everyone would be only too glad to see some new ones!

For some reason, I've had some extra time on my hands lately and so may very well dig through some older thoughts. Nice to know that this is a good thing.

And after I finished TWTTKH, I actually went right back to the Man in black fled across the desert. I flew through the first three (I've always thought that I didn't like TWL, but this most recent re-read taught me different), slowed down a bit for IV, raced through Wolves (am undecided whether this rates just above or just below TWL) and am halfway through SoS. I will read VII because I just have to. But for some strange reason, when I get to the end of VII, it just makes me want to start again
