Let me clear that up. Bill Paxton was great in the role and had some of the most memorable lines in the movie. But the script made the character a little too whiny or goofy at certain points.
He made those characters endearing despite how they were written.
I'll always love him in Predator 2

"Hey don't worry Lt., PR is my specialty!"
"Come on, surveillance is my specialty!"
Ahhh, he was "Everyman" in that crazy situation. We needed him in that role. IMHO

I agree with Merlin. The script may have written the character as whiny/goofy, but Paxton elevated, or lowered, him to the "everyman" level. Most of us have more of Hudson in us than we do Ripley, though we wish more for the later.

Danny McBride and James Franco are more than capable dramatic actors. McBride was excellent in All The Real Girls.

Theory: David is so fond of Shaw and the compassion she has shown him he is willing to wipe out the Engineers to protect her from them.
They may be, but their casting does not inspire confidence.
I find it odd you only see Franco once in the official trailer, and he's not even facing the screen, and he's technically uncredited. Makes me wonder how significant his role will be. McBride and who I think is his wife seem to be the central characters in terms of trailer screen time.

Who's going to see this movie in the next couple days? I would like to but I know its not going to happen. I will be checking here for reactions.
I will probably end up watching the Spurs and Warriors Saturday night instead. I am not sure which will be scarier.
I planned on it, but my enthusiasm is dampened now that I know it sucks.

I watched it last Sunday. It's practically a poor xerox of the original Alien movie.
I think the most unintentionally scathing thing I read about it was that was "content to simply lumber along until the next installment". That's a let down considering the huge potential this film had.
After the disappointment that was Prometheus, I don't know if I can trust Scott anymore.
Not that I really trust EW but they gave it a pretty good review. They made it sound like a mix of Prometheus and Alien. I loved the original Alien and while Prometheus had some stupid things in it overall it wasn't terrible. I guess we will see.
