Ask and you shall receive. I copied this from another board I post on. Keep in mind these are just books released in 2012. The list would look different if I included everything I read this year:

    1. Tim Lebbon - Nothing As It Seems. I haven't even read this collection but it tops the list. I saw the table of contents and Children of the New Disorder and Bleeding Things alone make this numero uno.

    2. China Mieville - Railsea. I grew up on Twain and Verne and this book although darker and weirder, reminded me of when I was a kid. It's super creative, imaginative and Mieville again invents words and builds worlds more convingly in 300 pages than fantasy writters do in 1000 epics full of irrelevant and tedious information.

    3. Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan - The Night Eternal. Very satisfying ending to a trilogy. I'm glad it wasn't a happy go lucky scenario.

    4. Tim Curran - The Underdwelling. This one was a tough one for me. He published Graveworm, Long Black Coffin, Puppet Graveyard and this one in 2012. The Underdwelling felt the most consistent. I give it a slight edge over Long Black Coffin because of the constant foreshadowing he used in LBC. It went from obvious to annoying - it became tedious reading that things would get worse at the ending of every third chapter. He didn't tell us things will get worse in The Underdwelling, but you can feel things won't end well. That's what I look for in a good story, tell the story, don't guide me through it. Anyways, I'm nitpicking. I love everything he wrote, just to a different degree.

    5. Tom Piccirilli - Last Kind Words. Could he have left any more of his soul on paper? Damn. Had Last Shallow Cut come out this year, the answer would've been yes and that book would've been #1. I really, really like this book and I keep recommending it to everyone I know.

    6. Tim Powers - Hide Me Among the Graves. This one took me two full months to read and it wasn't because it was boring. It was so image-heavy and challenging. I consider him, Lucius Shepard, Gene Wolfe and Dan Simmons the true wordsmiths. I feel challenged with their books, I need to think about what I just read and sometimes I need to turn a few pages back.

    7. Tim Lebbon - Heretic Land. Dark fantasy usually has me running away from the book. Not so in this case. I mean, it's REALLY dark. It's also bloody, gruesome and well-written.

    8. Norman Prentiss - The Fleshless Man. My first book by this author and I was really impressed. This one gets another read for sure.

    9. Greg F. Gifune - The Rain Dancers. I'm really getting into Dark Fuse novellas. I could've made a top 10 and just included DF titles and the list would've still been rock solid. The Rain Dancers has an oneiric quality to it not unlike The Fleshless Man. I dig it. I'll have to pick up whatever Gifune does next.

    10. Justin Cronin - The Twelve. Not as good as The Passage but still a very good read. Prose is lean and mean with just enough flare so you don't forget he's an English prof.

Honorable mentions that on a different day and different mood maybe would've made the top 10. No particular order:

Horror Drive-In Presents... , Joe Lansdale - Edge of Dark Water, Julianna Baggott - Pure (a little cliched, hopefully the sequel is more original), Paolo Bacigalupi - The Drowned Cities, Brandon Sanderson - Legion (he's known for his fantasy epics but this novella is better), Steve Rasnic Tem - Deadfall Hotel, Dennis Lehane - Live By Night, Michael Koryta - The Prophet, Tim Waggoner - The Harmony Society, Brian Hodge - Without Purpose, Without Pity, JG Faherty - The Cold Spot

The Wind Through the Keyhole makes a list too. One of the 2012 disappointments. This book felt like some afterthought King had, wrote it down in one sitting and did maybe one rewrite. It doesn't have the wonder (of The Gunslinger), conscise and ferocious prose (of The Drawing of the Three), action and adventure (of The Waste Lands) etc. I'm interested in Tim Ross the same way I'm interested in Rogue Squadron/Wedge Antilles - only peripherally and because the books are there. He adds nothing to the DT mythos, he's simply there. I'd be more interested in reading about the fall of Gilead and battle of Jericho or other monumental moments in DT books

This is my final list for 2012. I have added the 37% of A Game of Thrones I've read, and removed if from my Kindle. There's no way I'm finishing it, with such a lot of wonderful books around. So all together it makes 86 books in three languages, most of them read since June. If my Kindle doesn't let me down (knock on wood), it should be way over 100 in 2013.

Somehow I finished off this year with less than five books having read nearly a hundred the year before.
