King signed my UK Shining for me in Paris, but I would much rather have a signature from the time of release. I think recent signatures on older items are not so great.

May I ask what is the thinking behind this? I've seen other collectors say similar but I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

Between a 1st edition of SHINING signed by the time of the release or signed this year, which would you prefer?

Among the reasons, is probably the fact that earlier signatures were obviously rarer, therefore more desirable and valuable.

I would prefer either actually but because collectors put a higher value on the older sigs I would pick the older one but just for that reason.

There is a larger reason for this... the look of the signature. The older ones (especially before Kings accident) ARE MUCH "prettier" and nice looking. I would rather have an old one.. any day.

Yes, I agree. The older signature are simply prettier.

In addition to all the reasons above, a signature close to publication date has a temporal aesthetic connection to the work that is signed. There's something special about that.

Signature close to the publication date > recent signature > no signature at all...

Thanks for all the responses everyone. Oddly enough, the prettiness factor makes more sense to me then the timing factor.

They are one and the same. I don't believe Mr. King could duplicate his own signature from 25+ years ago. Other than one instance I am aware of (it was a requested quote), King doesn't back date things.

Of course you are correct. Upon further consideration it was a very stupid question and way of thinking on my part.
