I had to go with Bob. I love Robin Williams but the work of Mr. De Niro has a depth I don't think Williams has.

The same could be said for DiCaprio. Only in his case, it'd be more accurate. De Niro's most famous for either gangster or just plain ol' miserable bastard, but he's proven his versatility to me with his roles in Taxi Driver, Frankenstein and even Stardust.

    De Niro.

Some actors appear in great films, but a lot of De Niro's films are great because he is great in them.

I voted Leo. I love DeNiro but his career hasn't been too hot for over a decade. His last great role was Heat what, 16 years ago? DeNiro has had great roles but considering Leo's age and how much he has in front of him...DeNiro peaked 20 years ago, Leo is just peaking now and am very much looking forward to his portrayal of Hoover.

I don't see how it would be more accurate for DiCaprio. DeNiro is farily typecast for the most part and while there are differences in just about any given movie he's DeNiro. Which isn't a bad thing, Morgan Freeman is the same way and he's great. Eastwood as well. If you can tell me what links DiCaprio's performances in Gilbert Grape, Shutter Island, Gangs of New York, Catch Me If you Can and The Aviator I'd like to know what that is. DiCaprio is actually pretty diverse in his abilities. I think after the next twenty years have gone by and DiCaprio is still going he'll be really appreciated for how good he really is. Even with all the great performances and great movies he's done, he still gets slack and I simply don't understand it...not because he's a pretty boy because people give Brad Pitt credit. Is it Titanic? I think someone on this forum said 'he's in great movies, he doesn't make them great'. Doesn't make sense that the central character and the central actor the entire movie and cast is built around doesn't help make the movie what it is to me.

Me? No. I was sorta kidding. But I guess that, yeah, basing his career on that one film contributes to the popular bias Mattrick senses. Appears to me that judging an actor by one film is common. No less the case with stars who are judged positively thereby. I suspect that's played a big part in how this contest is going. I mean, I don't know for sure that anyone has thought "Oh, he/she 'is' (famous character)! I vote for that!" but it would make sense if more than a few have, don't you think?

I think De Niro's versitility is best demonstrated by films such as Awakenings, This Boys Life, Backdraft and Capefear. Hard to imagine the actor in these roles filling the roles in such films as Fock the Fockers.

I think the latter way of reasoning is justrified - unlike the former. They are not symmetrical. If anyone has been great once, it means he is great - he has already proved it. Once is proof enough, and Harper Lee is a great writer. Failure, however, doesn't prove anything, because logically no number of instances can prove the absence of something.

Personally, I never thought versatility was that important at all. There are actors who are versatile and there are others who represent types: in French cinema, two greatest actors ever (Alain Delon and Jean Gabin) epitomize these two different kinds, both remaining greatest actors ever (sadly, without ever having a slightest chance to get any recognition here). Let the director worry about the difference between these groups. For me it is nothing more than the difference between the tall and the small, the handsome and the ugly, a dancer and an athlete - they are different, is all, and it's up to the director/producer to fine the one who would be adequate for this particular part.
