I think the statement is pretty self explanatory Doubleday just sent out book to promote book sales IMHO I don't think it adds or subtracts from the value of the book. I do feel that books that are remaindered mark are less desirable as they where deliberately defaced to be sold at a cheaper price & can not be returned for a full refund.

I concur that it doesn't add to or detract from the value. I wouldn't call this an "ARC" as it's a 1st edition potentially sent out prior to the official release much like what is done today, only instead of stamping the books, there's a publisher letter. Calling it an advance copy would make sense in that context. As a completist, I would consider this another "state" of the book because of the stamp, even though it's not technically another state. But that's how I would reason it because I would want one with the stamp and one without.

    Appreciate the consideration.

There are only two printers variants that I know of, R.R. Donnelley & Son, Harrisonbury and Arcata Graphics, Fairfield. There may be others. There are also variants for Needful Things, Gerald's Game, Dolores Claiborne, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, Insomnia, Rose madder, Desperation and Black House.

    jonp, thank you for responding.
Does anyone happen to know where a legitimate list of all the variants are on the DT.org site?
Or... are you willing to share your personal variant list with me.

Doubleday used to give their sales reps copies of new releases or releases from new writers hoping that they (the book reps) would give them to booksellers to “promote” the book and/or the author. I believe it was simply a marketing practice that Doubleday found to be successful in generating sales. While there might have been some ARCs with that stamp, I believe that the majority of the stamps to be on first edition books.

I once owned an inscribed Carrie with that stamp on a piece of paper signed by the actual Doubleday book rep. Not sure if it adds value other than offering a glimpse into the pedigree of the book.

I'm thinking that my next S/L purchase will either be Insomnia or Full Dark, No Stars. I know that Insomnia is a little less expensive, but does one look better than the other in terms of production value? How can you sell me in which one to buy?

    That is easy. Buy both!

Insomnia is definitely a little more creative in terms of production but it's definitely tough to beat a CD signed limited.

For my money, get the Insomnia. Better overall production. Besides, I always go for the novels over short story or novella collections. In the end though, you'll get them both, so does it really matter?

    Alec,

That is a very nice accomplishment! I've seen a same-number set for what would be considered the "numbered" edition. I'm not sure how many of those were published right now. But I've not seen a same-number set of the 1/33 edition. Big congratulations!!!

    Best,

There are 4 variants of the book

    Trade edition
Artist signed only (333 of each artist)
Slipcased signed by all 3 artists plus SK (150)
Traycased signed by all 3 artists plus SK (33)
