    still a long way ...

I do own all now and 5 aren't firsts.
If i find a dedicated first of
    • LOTR
    • Simarillon
    • Hurin
    • Unfinished Tales
    • Perilous realm
by chance or somebody reads that and has one to share i will be happy to upgrade, but im uncertain that i will actively search for them.
Two of them would be available, signed (AL) , for 350 each , but i am not there yet to pay that ;D

I got remarqued/signed Arthur and signed AL Gondolin.

I would like Simarillion 1st but I already tried for that years ago so not worried about it. And still haven't decided to try and track down an LOTR.

Here's another curious thing (well, 2, actually..):

1- I don't think that there actually ARE US HM deluxe editions for all of these books.. Can anyone find the last few deluxe titles that are anything other than UK Harper Collins'..?

2- It also appears- at least re: the trade editions of these- that there are sizing differences between the UK & US.. I had thought that they were virtually identical. They typically had been. Which is why I've always just gotten (the easier to get) US HM editions.

Can anyone confirm any of the above?

I cannot confirm personally, however Pieter Collier of The Tolkien Library should be able to furnish me with the details. I will find out for you.

A couple of Hobbits to add to his ever expanding Tolkien collection. The first is a second edition, 12th Impression but signed. and the second is a first edition, Rebound by the renowned London bookbinders, Sangorsky and Sutcliffe. They have done an incredible job on this book, even managing to retain the original map paste downs, both front and back.

Against my better judgement I've decided to start collecting the HarperCollins deluxe slipcased editions, starting with whatever printings I can find. I love the look of them, and the stories are just wonderful.

I don't feel the need to have first printings ...

I too don't care about fine print, but keep in mind that, in the case of Tales From The Perilous Realm, the foil stamping on the book itself is 3 colors (gold, red, silver) only on early printings (and perhaps only the first printing; I don't own it and am not sure) but only 1 color (gold) on later printings. If I ever get around to hunting this down, I would definitely want the 3-color one.

So far, so good. These are all recent printings, probably never to appreciate in value beyond what I paid for them. Nice editions though.

    These are beautiful:

    https://www.ebay.nl/itm/292928659485?ul_noapp=true

    Description from eBay:

"For sale is a very recently re-bound set of Tolkien books published by the Folio Society. Set comprises of 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord Of The Rings' and 'The Silmarillion. All are first editions by this publisher and were published in 1979, 1977 and 1997 respectively. The books were re-bound by myself in January 2019.

All five books have been bound in hand mottled, antique brown goatskin. The leather is very smooth and has the luxurious feel of calfskin. Marbled endpapers in brown and black were created by world renowned, master marbler Jemma Lewis, also based here in the UK. Books have been re-glued and linen and Oxford hollows applied to the spines. This re-strengthens the books.

All page edges have been sprinkled with black ink. There are black silk marker ribbons and black endbands on all books. The fronts and backs have all been stamped in gold - the original dragon design on The Hobbit, the ring design on LOTR, and the two trees of Valinor to The Silmarillion (stamped in gold and silver). The back boards of The Hobbit and LOTR have been stamped with Tolkien's monogram.

The titles and authors name have been stamped to the spines between five raised bands. Both sides of all the raised bands have been hand tooled with gold lines. Front and back boards have hand tooled 'blind' frames 10mm from the edges.

The books come with three custom made, curved edge slipcases. All slipcases have been lined with black suede and covered with brown 'Darling' cloth.

The Hobbit - 1979 (first edition). Illustrated by Eric Fraser. 245 pages

The Fellowship Of The Ring - 1977 (first edition). Illustrated by Eric Fraser. 459 pages

The Two Towers - 1977 (first edition). Illustrated by Eric Fraser. 372 pages

The Return Of The King - 1977 (first edition). Illustrated by Eric Fraser. 487 pages (inc. appendixes)
(the three LOTR books have a bit of an 'old book' smell to them. But they are old books!)

The Silmarillion - 1997 (first edition). Illustrated by Francis Mosley. 420 pages plus foldout map
(there is a small crease to the bottom edge of a couple of the last pages. This has likely been caused by the folded map. It is minor but do ask if you would like a photo to see for yourself)

There is my tiny signature stamp in black ink to the back inside endpaper in each volume.

    About The Binder

I am a fully trained, award-winning bookbinder based in Shropshire, U.K. I currently work full-time for a family owned binders (also multi award-winning). I was trained to hand bind books by master binder Brian Settle. In my time at the company I have, among many other things, managed a large project for the SAS and made books for Prince Charles and the Bamford family. Our work at the bindery is extremely varied but we generally specialise in leather bound editions, usually with presentation boxes. We often make books for VIP's including the Royal Family and the Pope as well as producing short runs of limited edition books for small and large publishers.

Personally, I have been responsible for providing Christopher Tolkien with his personal special edition copies of his new titles, most recently 'The Fall Of Gondolin', commissioned by Harper Collins on his behalf.

Outside of work hours I make my own creations as Lyra's Books. At the end of 2017 I won the prestigious Elizabeth Soutar award for my binding of 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman. The book is now a part of the permanent collection of The National Library of Scotland. The other copy I made is in the hands of the author himself.

Please feel free to follow me or check me out on social media @ Lyrasbooks

    www.facebook.com/lyrasbooks

    www.instagram.com/lyrasbooks"

(I have no connection to the seller; I just love the books).

Wow, Becca. Sorry I somehow missed this reply from 2 months ago!

I got them from a variety of sources, but mostly bookdepository and ABE. I don't usually buy from bookdepository much because their packaging SUCKS, but these volumes arrived with no damage, luckily. Prices were between $50-80 with free shipping. Likely these are the most recent printings, so nothing very collectible; just nice books to own and read.

Incidentally, I now have the whole set except Fall of Arthur, and have opened and enjoyed them. Man, they are nice editions! I'll go through them and list the printings I have in a future post.

(What is it with Fall of Arthur? The only copies I've seen are astronomically priced. Was there only one printing done?)
